Summer Reading Challenge

Kia ora everyone

A big thank-you and congratulations to all those who took part in Summer Reading Challenge this summer!

We really enjoyed reading all your fantastic reviews and hope that you will keep writing and sending more reviews in for our Kids’ Club.

We would also like to congratulate our overall Summer Reading Challenge winners. The prizes this year go to Zahra from Karori, who was very excited by her new book collection and Ben from Miramar who loves books on sharks!

The school challenge this year was taken out by Karori  West Normal School who had the most students taking part. They received $500 worth of book tokens for the school and some great books for the School Library. It was pretty close, so don’t forget to get your friends at school to take part next summer.

Sadly summer is now drawing to a close but we still have lots of great books at the library to get stuck into. If you can’t decide what to read look at some of the ideas from the Kids Blog and Kids Reviews pages in the Kids’ Club. If you can’t get down to the library try downloading a book or an audio book online!

Happy reading everyone.

It’s our birthday, but you could get the presents!

Wellington City Libraries is turning 175 years old! This makes us the oldest library system in New Zealand – wow!

To celebrate our birthday, we’re holding a party at the Wellington Central Library on Saturday 21st November.

For the creative and crafty people out there, we have a couple of competitions that you can enter.

The colouring competition is for 5-8yr olds. New Zealand’s first public library was a small hut on the Wellington waterfront. Colour in the picture of the hut, fill in your details on the back, and drop it in to any Wellington City library to enter.

The design competition is for 9-13yr olds. We want you to draw your idea of the library of the future! What do you think Wellington City Libraries will look like 175 years from now (that’s the year 2190, by the way)? Draw your design on the front, fill in your details on the back, and drop it into to any Wellington City library to enter the competition.

The competitions close on 29th November, and the winners will be announced on 1st December.

(Click the links above to download the competition forms to print at home!)

Good luck!

Conservation Week 1st – 8th November

Conservation week is coming up and this year the theme is Healthy Nature, Healthy People. Check out all the great ideas for things to do and competitions to enter on the Department of Conservation website.

Besides finding out about events you can also find heaps of other information about our native plants and animals and how to save them. There is lots of little things we can do to help protect and save our environment.

I really like the section on attracting lizards into your garden. Did you know that we have more than 99 species of lizard in New Zealand. We also have many geckos and skinks and 33 of our skinks are found no where else in the world so it is really important that we learn how to protect them.

You can check out all the things you can do to attract them into your garden from the plants they like right through to building them a lizard house.

The library has heaps of great books on conservation as well – so slip, slop, slap and get out into the great outdoors and start saving.

Win your height in books

Take part in a competition to celebrate NZ Bookshop day.

NZBookshopDayBookshops are really important – they give you access to a huge range of amazing reading materials that you can fill your house and bedroom with. People who write and illustrate books use bookshops to sell their books and make money, so they can then write and illustrate even more books. So the more often you use your local bookshop, the more books can be created, and that’s an awesome thing.

NZ Bookshop Day is on Saturday 31st October (yup – same day as Halloween). To celebrate and get people involved they are running a photo competition. It’s really easy – just snap a funny and entertaining picture of yourself reading anywhere and any way, and upload it here.

The best photo will win their height in books, and the 2nd best photo will win their knee-height in books. That’s a lot of books!

Get reading, get snapping, and get into your local bookshop.

(Entries close 29th October at 5pm).

Hey Kids! Write a review – win prizes. It’s Easy Peasy.

kidsclub-sidebarCheck out the library Kids’ Club – it’s an online place where you can find out what other kids have been reading and what they think of the books, and where you can write your own reviews. But did you know that every person that has written those reviews received prizes for them? You can too! Each review you write earns you prizes that you can collect from your library. It’s fun, easy and free.

(Keep an eye out for the Kids’ Club Summer Reading Challenge – where there are heaps more cool prizes up for grabs. Starts in December)
