Join in games and stories about Maui the trickster god. Catch your fingers and your friends with string games, and find where Maui is hiding in a Matariki treasure hunt.

Multicultural Matariki: Take a mythical voyage with us and find out what Matariki means to people around the world. Make your own Matariki star or kite to fly.

Maui Matariki: activities and games, including fishing for place names to put on a map of New Zealand.

Tawa Library, 2pm

School Holiday fun

We love Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo -Maori Language Week, so much that we are having more free fun activities during the school holidays to celebrate them!

Here’s what’s happening:

Saturday 13th July, 10.30am at Wellington Central Library: 

Wellington Children’s Community Choir, featuring 5-12year old choristers, will be putting on a special performance for all. Come along and watch, listen and participate.

 

Tuesday 16th July, 11am at Wadestown Library and Community Space:

Matariki Magic: Celebrate Matariki, our Aotearoa New Year, with a free school holiday activity session. Story reading, Maori songs and legends and a fun Matariki Badge-making craft activity

 

Wednesday 17th July, 11am at Wellington Central Library:

Matariki Magic: Celebrate the close of Matariki, our Aotearoa New Year, with a free school holiday activity session at Central Library. Explore our myths and legends with a fun Matariki badge-making craft activity afterwards.

 

Thursday 18th July, 11am at Kilbirnie Library:

Multicultural Matariki: Take a mythical voyage with us and find out what Matariki means to people around the world. Make your own Matariki star or kite to fly.

Matariki Family Fun Day

Celebrate Matariki 2013 with Wellington City Libraries.

Free family activity and performance day at the Wellington Central Library. Bring your whanau along and watch amazing performances, treasure hunts, learn traditional string and stick games, flax weaving and more!

Saturday 22nd June, Wellington Central Library, from 11am

 

11am: Te-Whanganui-a-Tara kapa haka group performing waiata and stick and hand games

11.30am: Special Matariki storytime with star librarian Stu

12.30pm: Whai – string games with Frith Driver-Burgess

1pm: Harakeke – simple flax weaving of nga whetu and putiputi withYvonne Mason

1pm: Special performance by Anna Bailey and her String Bean Puppets – feel like a matariki star, have your portrait painted by Evaline the string puppet and artist extraordinaire!

2pm: Special performance by Anna Bailey and her String Bean Puppets – Pasta Arrabiata: a cooking show with strings attached! As the nights get longer come and see string puppet Edmond Snail whip up a matariki feast.

 

Also on throughout the day:

1pm – 3pm: badge making – make your very own matariki badge to wear

11am – 3pm: family treasure hunt around the library

11am – 3pm: fill our library with matariki stars – make your very own wishing star and hang it in the library.

Cool events at the Newlands Community Centre

Have you ever visited the Newlands Community Centre? It’s really cool and they always have fun stuff happening. Here’s what’s coming up:

– Come along to the ‘Legends of Maui story time’ on Monday 10th, 17th, and 24th June from from 9.30–10.15am. snuggle up and listen to stories of Maui’s legendary adventures

– Join us for a weaving session with Ngā Hau e Whā o Paparārangi Marae’s rāranga (weaving) group. We will be making putiputi (flowers) and Taonga Takaro (toys). A koha towards the rāranga group would be appreciated. Wednesday 12 June, 6.30 – 8.30pm

Matariki Storytelling at Tawa Library

Bring your children to Tawa Library to hear special stories read by people from our community, about Matariki and beyond.No Charge. All welcome.
