Mōrenā koutou katoa! Hei te ata nei kei te whakatūwhera mātou i te whārangi ipurangi mō te Māwhai tuhituhi, tā koutou pakiwaitara tuhituhi ā-ipurangi.

Kua oti kē i te kaituhi rongonui haere nei a Paora Tibble te whiti tuatahi te tuhituhi, ā, māu e whakamutua – āpiti atu ō tuhituhi ki te pakiwaitara ia rā, hei te 21-25 o Hūrae. Āpiti tō tuhi hei te wahanga tuhi ki raro nei, uru ki te whārangi o te māwhai tuhituhi hei te patohia i te pikitia “māwhai tuhi” ki raro nei ki tetukuna i tō tuhi ki a mātou.

Ka whiriwhirihia kotahi te whiti ia rā hei wini i te taonga mo te rā, ki te wikitoria i te taonga nunui pea, ā, ki te hono ki te pakiwaitara mo te whiti o te rā.

Hei whakanui i Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2014, kei te mahi pakiwaitara tuhituhi ā-ipurangi Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, ā, ka taea e koe e tō kura rānei ētahi taonga te wini.

Kua oti kē i te kaituhi rongonui haere nei a Paora Tibble te whiti tuatahi te tuhituhi, ā, māu e āpiti atu ō tuhituhi ki te pakiwaitara ia rā, hei te 21-25 o Hūrae.

Ka whiriwhirihia kotahi te whiti ia rā (tae atu ki te 200 kupu), mai i ia reanga, ka mutu hoki ngā pakiwaitara hei te ahiahi o te Paraire te 25 o Hūrae.

Ko ngā Reanga: (Kura) Tau 1-8, me te Tau 9-13

Ko ngā taonga ia rā he pēke whare pukapuka, he kāri koha, he haki pukapuka hoki.

Ko ngā taonga mā ngā toa tuhituhi kotahi iPapa mō ia reanga, ā, he haki e $250 hei hoko pukapuka mō ngā kura o ngā toa tuhituhi.

To celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2014, Wellington City Libraries are weaving an online story, with the chance for you and your school to win some cool prizes.

Well-known author, Paora Tibble, has written the first paragraph but we need you to continue the story each day, from 21-25 July.

A paragraph (up to 200 words) will be selected, daily, from each age group, and the stories will finish on Friday afternoon, 25 July.

Age Groups are: (School) Year 1-8, and Year 9-13

Daily prizes include library bags, concession cards and book vouchers.

The prizes for overall winners include an iPad for each age group winner, plus $250 of book vouchers for the winners’ schools.

The school with the most contributors will also win $250 of book vouchers!

This week is Matariki -also known as Maori New Year. Want to find out more? Check out these marvelous Matariki books:

Daniel’s Matariki feast by Rebecca Beyer and Linley Wellington.

Daniel is a new boy at a school. His teacher Stacey introduces him to the other boys and they go and pick pumpkins from the school garden. Back inside the Teacher talks to the class about Matariki and the feast they are going to have if the pumpkins are ready.

The class talk to Daniel about Matariki and he goes home and talks about it with his family. His mother knew about Matariki as her Granny used to watch the sky for it. What happens next is really lovely.

 

 

Child of Aotearoa by Melanie Drewery, illustrated by Bruce Potter.

This is a very lovely story about the different Peoples coming to Aotearoa. It starts with the first Maori arriving and then goes on to other races arriving here.
People travelling through and settling here in Aotearoa. The sons and daughters of this land grow up and have children of their own and they grow up all Children of Aorearoa.

“The children grow and pass the line down to you. A line woven with many threads from other lands. Passed down through me to you — child of Aotearoa.”
This book has lovely pictures.

 

Matariki by Melanie Drewery

This is a story about a family who have a surprise visit from their Grandma. There is going to be a surprise happening for them and they have to wait and see. This is really exciting event happening the next day Matariki and the whole family are getting together for it. Matariki andthe special events are explained in this story.

Beautiful pictures and the book is available in both English and Te Reo.

This is the story of a mother telling her child about a beautiful teasure that she has. He has to try and guess it. Can you?

Whakanuia Matariki, Whakanuia te Tau Hou Māori – Celebrate Matariki – Celebrate the Māori New Year!

Matariki starts this year on 28 June, but we are kicking off early with a special preschool storytime series all about Matariki, myths and outer space.

The series will run for four weeks at Cummings Park Library, Ngaio and starts on Wednesday the 11th of June at 10.30am.

Preschoolers are encouraged to bring along something creative they’ve made to do with Matariki, myths and outer space. It could be a star, a rocket ship, a woven kete, a taniwha, a Matariki kite or anything related to Ao Māori (Māori world) made with or without the help of parents and caregivers. All children who bring along art will receive a prize!

We would love to create a starry night sky out of the preschoolers’ art in the children’s area.

Matariki at Tawa Library

Tawa Library had fun with pois, porotiti (Maori musical instrument) and stick games at our July holiday programme.

First up librarian Brigid read us The fish of Maui along with some other great Maori legends. Then we all had a go at fishing up some Maori place names which we had to place on a map of New Zealand. It was fun trying to work out where they all went.

We then had heaps of fun learning how to play the stick game. We learnt lots of different moves and we had sticks flying everywhere.  Even the parents joined in for that.

School Holiday fun

We love Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo -Maori Language Week, so much that we are having more free fun activities during the school holidays to celebrate them!

Here’s what’s happening:

Saturday 13th July, 10.30am at Wellington Central Library: 

Wellington Children’s Community Choir, featuring 5-12year old choristers, will be putting on a special performance for all. Come along and watch, listen and participate.

 

Tuesday 16th July, 11am at Wadestown Library and Community Space:

Matariki Magic: Celebrate Matariki, our Aotearoa New Year, with a free school holiday activity session. Story reading, Maori songs and legends and a fun Matariki Badge-making craft activity

 

Wednesday 17th July, 11am at Wellington Central Library:

Matariki Magic: Celebrate the close of Matariki, our Aotearoa New Year, with a free school holiday activity session at Central Library. Explore our myths and legends with a fun Matariki badge-making craft activity afterwards.

 

Thursday 18th July, 11am at Kilbirnie Library:

Celebrate Matariki 2013 with Wellington City Libraries.

Free family activity and performance day at the Wellington Central Library. Bring your whanau along and watch amazing performances, treasure hunts, learn traditional string and stick games, flax weaving and more!

11am: Te-Whanganui-a-Tara kapa haka group performing waiata and stick and hand games

11.30am: Special Matariki storytime with star librarian Stu

12.30pm: Whai – string games with Frith Driver-Burgess

1pm: Harakeke – simple flax weaving of nga whetu and putiputi withYvonne Mason

1pm: Special performance by Anna Bailey and her String Bean Puppets – feel like a matariki star, have your portrait painted by Evaline the string puppet and artist extraordinaire!

2pm: Special performance by Anna Bailey and her String Bean Puppets – Pasta Arrabiata: a cooking show with strings attached! As the nights get longer come and see string puppet Edmond Snail whip up a matariki feast.

 

Also on throughout the day:

1pm – 3pm: badge making – make your very own matariki badge to wear

11am – 3pm: family treasure hunt around the library

11am – 3pm: fill our library with matariki stars – make your very own wishing star and hang it in the library.
