Rainbow Storytimes!

Come and listen to some wonderful Rainbow Stories at Wellington Central Library presented by Wellington’s favourite Drag Queen, the fabulous LaQuisha St Refern and friends. Celebrate our Rainbow Families with this special fun storytime  event for children, their families and anyone who likes stories!

Chinese New Year & Special Storytimes at the Library

Come down to Wellington Central Library and Civic Square to celebrate the Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dog, with special storytime events for pre-schoolers and their families presented by the Ni Hao Children’s Community.

We have 2 Storytimes for you at Wellington Central Library on Saturday the 17th of February which will be in Chinese, but guess what? It doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Chinese you are going to have lots of fun listening to another language and doing activities all about the year of the Dog. Bring along a toy dog, dress in your New Year clothes (or Dog costume), or just come as you are, to share familiar stories and songs like ‘Spot the Dog’ or ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’…but in Chinese! Don’t forget while you are down at Central Library to check out all the fun activities that are going to be happening outside in Civic Square.

BIG BOOK BASH: Wairarapa & Wellington Kids & Youth Festival

Love writing and making Zines? Enjoy storytimes and want to meet some of your favourite authors and illustrators? How about learning to make Ginomee hats or paper bag dogs? These are just some of the 30+ free events that are going to be on offer at the BIG BOOK BASH! With so much cool stuff on offer your day will be jam packed but don’t forget to come along to the Wellington City Library stand and pick up a Scavenger Hunt entry form so you can go into the draw to win a bag filled with BOOKS! Be prepared for a feast of books and a fabulous array of authors, illustrators and activities at the BIG BOOK BASH, Saturday 2nd December in Carterton, Wairarapa. Here’s too a fun filled and (fingers crossed) sunshine filled day, hope to see you there!

The 12 Storytimes of Christmas

Wow I can’t believe it is that time of year already! Yes Christmas is just around the corner and it’s the time when we love to have special Christmas Storytime events at your Libraries, for all the family to enjoy. So pop on your pyjamas or favourite Christmas costume and head down to your local library for stories and songs to celebrate this festive season. Oh and while you’re there don’t forget to pick up your “Wild About Reading: Summer Reading Challenge” booklet!

Mahi Moa ScavengAR Hunt!

The school holidays are underway and we are having such fun at Wellington City Libraries thinking up wonderful things for you to do. So we got together with ScimatAR who have a created an awesome Augmented Reality ScavengAR Hunt for you to do! Ever wanted to see a Moa walk through a library? Now you can! Come and meet Mahi the Moa and roam our non-fiction section solving puzzles and seeing things that others can’t. All you need is an android device (phone or tablet), whoops haven’t got one? Well come along and we will find you one to do the ScavengAR Hunt with.

Augmented reality layers a computer generated reality on top of the real world – in this case, a range of interactive activities that will come to life around you. Keen for an interactive and unique experience? Come on down to your local branch library to give the ScavengAR Hunt a go. Not in Wellington but up on the Kāpiti Coast? Guess what, Kāpiti libraries have the ScavengAR Hunt as well!

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori Competition

Kia ora everyone! To Celebrate Māori Language week at Wellington City Libraries we are having a competition to name our Kōhunga Kōrero Puppets!

Tuī and Pūngāwerewere desperately need names and we think that you are the best people to name them. We would love you to come up with some great names. So when you’re in your local library this week getting some books to read, come up to the counter and we’ll write down your suggestions, along with your name and a contact number and put you in the draw to win prizes! The competition close this Rātapu (Sunday) the 17th of  Mahuru (September)so be quick and next week we’ll let you know who the lucky winners are. Ka kite anō!

Mystery, Mayhem and Madness: A detective Adventure!

Wow! I can’t believe that the school holidays are almost upon us and this time have we got a treat in store for you at Wellington City Libraries! It’s time to delve into the World of mystery, mayhem and madness with a great detective adventure story, yes you are going to be the detectives! We have clues galore for you to search for and a mystery worthy of Sherlock Holmes himself. Always wanted to get your detective license? Well, now’s your chance! Solve the mystery that has been baffling the librarians and we will reward you with a special Detective license. Are you up for the challenge? Can you solve the mystery and escape the Library…

So don your Deerstalker, nab your notebook and check for clues at a Wellington City Library near you!

The Great Teddy Bear Sleepover comes to Khandallah Library!

Yes, you heard right! The Great Teddy Bear Sleepover is coming to Khandallah Library for the first time on Thursday the 31st of August at 6:30pm! Bring your favourite teddy bear or soft toy and join us for a super fun half hour of stories, songs, and activities, then leave your teddies behind to have a big sleepover with all their new friends. Who knows what they’ll get up to in the library after hours… pick them up on Friday to find out!

Lego Legends is coming to Wellington City Libraries!


Creativity. Problem solving. Storytelling. Fun!

After a hugely popular debut at Khandallah Library during Beyond the Page, Lego Legends is being introduced as a regular, monthly event at Karori and Cummings Park (Ngāio) Libraries. In Lego Legends, your creative skills will be put to the test as you use the library’s Lego collections to design and build your masterpieces. Each session will have a different theme that will inspire you to hone your skills and become your library’s very own Lego Legend.

Sessions are suitable for ages 5+

Karori Library: First Saturday of each month, beginning Saturday 2nd of September, 2:30-3:30pm.
Cummings Park (Ngāio) Library: Third Monday of each month, beginning Monday 18th of September, 3:30-4:30pm.
