Nevermore by Linda Newbery

Tizzie’s life is never dull. Her mother is always moving them from place to place, never consulting Tizzie on whether it is what she wants or not. So when they arrive at Roven Manor where her mother is the new cook and Tizzie begins to unravel the secrets of the place, she is not happy to move before she knows what has happened to the mysterious Greta. Why is everything being made ready for Greta and Lord Rupert’s return when they never seem to be coming back? Who is the mysterious hermit-like Finnigan? Will Tizzie ever find out the truth? A good read.

Eating Bogeys is good for you

I have just finished reading this really neat book called Why eating bogeys is good for you…and other crazy facts explained. This book says that eating your bogeys is actually good for your health, yuck. I also found out why birds don’t get electrocuted when they perch on electricity wires and why women don’t have beards. There are some funny and interesting facts in this book. You won’t be able to put it down.

Olympic Kids!

Well we are getting closer to the Olympics! I’ve just found another talented young person. Cate Campbell is only 15 but is but is already ranked fourth. She has an amazing record of a scorching 24.48 seconds in the women’s 50m freestyle. Watch out for her in Beijing 2008! She will be 16 by the time she goes to the games. Check out her profile. Do you like swimming? What do you think?

Handmaiden of Queen Cleopatra!

Book jacketCleopatra by Adele Geras is a very interesting book! It’s written in diary style by a young girl called Nefret who went to work for Queen Cleopatra when she was 10 years old. Nefret’s diary tells of the events that happened between the years we call 41-40BCE. It’s quite gripping and I’ve learnt heaps!

History is very fascinating! Have a read and let me know what you think. Imagine being a handmaiden in a palace for a queen. Have you heard of Queen Cleopatra before? Do you already know anything about her?

A Billy Sook

book coverI came across a book by Shel Silverstein which was completed just before he died in 1999. Its title is Runny Babbit and it’s a poetry book that interchanges the first letters of certain words. It’s really a good read because you sort of try to figure out what the interchanged words are as you read along. Confused enough? Well here’s a sample of a boem from the pook, ooops! I meant poem from the book!

RUNNY’S HEADING RABITS

Runny lent to the wibrary

And there were bundreds of hooks-

Bistory hooks, beography gooks,

And lots of bory stooks.

He looked them over one by one

And guess which one he took-

A bience sook? A boetry pook?

Oh, no — a bomic cook!

I had a lot of fun reading this topsy-turvy book… maybe you will too. It’s in the children’s fiction area of the library. Yee sah!
