Wow! Not many days till the Olympics now! Are you going to watch them? Daria Joura is just 18! Her coach reckons that she will be able to pick up a medal at this year’s games in Beijing! She started gymnastics when she was just 4 years old. Both of her parents are coaches. She was born in Russia but now lives in Australia, and she’s competing for the Australian team. Have a look at this clip of her. Imagine the time you would have to spend practising to get this good!

Olympic Kids! Lauren Mitchell
Lauren Mitchell is nearly 17. She is going to compete at Beijing this year: she’s representing Australia. She began gymnastics 9 years ago because it looked fun! Have a look at this footage of her in this pre-Olympic test in 2007, and this in 2008. It’s so smooth and clever. Imagine being able to throw your body around like that. I find it amazing watching gymnastics. Fancy getting to compete when you are just 17! What do you think?

Hey, there’s a 10-year-old going to the Olympics!! His name is Gandalf. Ok, ok I admit it…… he’s a horse (a gelding)…… but he’s a goer. He will be Mark Todd’s horse for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He’s grey, and he arrived in the South Island to train with Mark Todd at the end of January. Mark Todd liked Gandalf immediately. He says he’s a bit of a lazy horse, and he like to eat a lot so they are trying to get him slimmed down and they are teaching him to gallop a bit better. Watch out for Gandalf at the Olympics! He also starred in a video by rapper Scribe last year……

Hey guys here is our hot Olympic young person for this month….. Samantha Hamill. She started this sport, swimming, when she was six. Samantha has won quite a few titles already, especially for her age group. One of her events at the olympics this year is swimming butterfly. I find butterfly a hard style to swim! Isn’t it amazing to be going to the olympics at 17? Imagine doing training and schoolwork! A big commitment aye? How’s your butterfly swim style? :o)
