Eating Bogeys is good for you

I have just finished reading this really neat book called Why eating bogeys is good for you…and other crazy facts explained. This book says that eating your bogeys is actually good for your health, yuck. I also found out why birds don’t get electrocuted when they perch on electricity wires and why women don’t have beards. There are some funny and interesting facts in this book. You won’t be able to put it down.

Do you know? …

That you sometimes get called a pig if you eat too much – that’s because farmyard pigs will just keep on eating and eating until their stomachs burst and they die.

Why you burp when you have a fizzy drink? – It’s the carbon dioxide in the fizzy drink that makes this happen.  When we eat or drink we swallow air, and the air contains gases like nitrogen and oxygen. So a burp is just gas.

That a flea market doesn’t actually sell fleas – It’s the name of a street market that sells second-hand/used thingslanglang. That an electric eel isn’t really an eel, but a long fish that happens to be electric. The South American electric eel can electrocute and knock out a horse from 3 metres away. An earthworm has 10 hearts. Tarantula spiders can live up to 20 years. The lungfish, which lives in hot, dry deserts, can live without food or water for 4 years.

That our eyes stay the same size our whole lives, but noses and ears just keep on growing.

Horrible facts

Ok, I’ve done some very important research and found these weird and disgusting facts that you can tell everyone…..but i bet they don’t believe that they are for real!

Guess what Ancient Romans used to dye their hair with?  Something white and sticky that comes out of pigeons bottoms, yes, pigeon poo!  How gross!

Speaking of poo, did you know that beetle poo is called a ‘twissle’?!

Mmm, feeling hungry?  Fancy some hedge-hog flavoured chips?  Yes, apparently they do exist but I’ve never seen a shop selling them!  And in

South-East Asia some people eat deep friend insects instead of chips, yum yum, crispy cockroach……Arrgghh!  I just read something really horrible!  In Sardinia (that’s an island off

Italy) you can eat a cheese that has live maggots in it!  They leave the cheese in the sun so that the flies lay their eggs on it and when the maggots hatch out it’s ready to eat!  That is making me feel really sick!Ug, that’s all the disgusting facts I can take right now I think but if you want more check out the quiz books in the library, they’ll be in the junior non-fiction section 793.73, if you can’t find any, find a librarian and ask them! (plus see if they believe you about the facts!!) Eleanor

A Book With A Tongue?

Wow, the most amazing book just came into our library.  It’s called ‘The Gooey, Chewy, Rumble, Plop Book’ and it’s got a REAL TONGUE on the cover, a sticky stretchy one.  It’s a Pop-Up book (but they call it a Plop-Up), and it’s all about digesting your food.  There’s lots of flaps and facts and moving pictures and ‘guess the close-ups’.  It’s heaps of fun!

The book is written by Steve Alton and illustrated by Nick Sharratt, and it’s REFERENCE ONLY which means you can’t take it home with you.  🙁   But you can read it while you’re in the library, so ask the librarian if you can have a look – you might discover even more fun Pop-Up books while you’re there!

How to learn & be disgusting at the same time

How many ways can you think of to say ‘vomit’? Well, I had a go and I only got to around 5. A great book to help you find that and other interesting words can be found in the glorious book The Disgusting Dictionary by Tracey Turner. It’s an A to Z of rude and horrid words that you will make your stomach turn with while still be able to make you laugh your head!

It also has disgusting facts throughout it such as – “Snot from a sneeze can travel up to 3.5 metres”. Reading this book you will be sure to wow your friends and family with the wonders of disgusting gross stuff. Just make sure that you pick people with strong stomachs to listen to you or you could end up making them barf/hurl/heave/puke/upchuck…..
