Two new audio-books are in: The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft volume 1, and The Dark Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft volume 2. H. P. Lovecraft was an early 20th-century American writer, whose stories are notoriously chilling. When read aloud in a voice that sounds like it’s coming from inside a tomb (as these stories are), you will won’t want to listen to them at night with all the lights off.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army is about to come to a theatre near you, which is very good news if you’re a fan of the comics. Or if you like special effects. Maybe you just enjoyed the first Hellboy film (which we have on DVD!) Some may even be a fan of actor Luke Goss, who was once half of Bros, one of the most popular boy bands of the 80s. (We haven’t any of their CDs, unfortunately.) Perhaps you’re a fan of director Guillermo del Toro, whose next project is the first of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films (the filming of which begins in 2010). Maybe you are all of these things – it’s pretty evident that I am.
(And if you aren’t, maybe start with the comics.)
The giant squid that was caught last year is currently being defrosted at Te Papa. Excitingly, you can watch it defrost in real-time here from cameras in the ‘tank and dissection room’. There is also a blog detailing the event. Eventually the squid will be put on display. Awesome.
The population of the world’s deadliest creature – the box jellyfish – is increasing. These are very different to the jellyfish we find washed up on the beach; these things have four brains, 24 eyes, and 8 foot long tentacles of death. And they swim around in massive packs. Packs of death.
If you like the idea of oceanic horrors, you may like the classic stories of H. P. Lovecraft, whose Cthulhu tales have been influencing popular culture for decades (Hellboy, for example, or maybe Cloverfield). They were written in the early part of last century but still frighten.
