The Eighth Note: Tarn PK

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next is Tarn PK.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I’m an artist, songwriter and producer based in Wellington, New Zealand. Who am I? I’d like to be more than just the music I make, but on the music side of things, I’m someone who’s striving to create something that resonates, excites, and compels me forwards. My music has always been evolving. If you look at the last 3 EP’s I’ve released there’s quite a diversity in the sound, themes, and feeling. I’m exploring and trying to tap into what feels most unique for me. It’s definitely a process and a journey I’m really excited to be on.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
At the moment I’m in a phase of really figuring out where to go next. I released the single Papier-Mâché late last year, which feels like a step in a great direction. I made the song in April on a song-writing trip to Auckland and it just felt like a breath of fresh air. You always hope when you make something that when you come back to it maybe a few days later that the excitement you had when making it is still retained. This was one of those songs that I kept that excitement the whole way up to the release, which isn’t always the case. Otherwise, I’m currently working on new material for this year. The big question is where next. We’ll have to wait and see ahah.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Social media wise Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok. All streaming services will work for listening! [Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube].

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
The Beatles were a big influence growing up. Abbey Road always has a big place in my heart. It feels like a very complete album with all their influences coming together to make some of their best stuff. I don’t think as a child I listened to many albums by myself, it would’ve been more played in the background at home which I wasn’t paying attention to. I think in the early 2000’s albums were really starting to fall away for more casual listeners. I’ve only in the past few years been making a concerted effort to really take the time to listen through album and absorb them for their format and art form.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
I reckon it would be cool to work with an artist like Drax Project or Rikki Reid.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
I actually haven’t done any gigs for my own music in Wellington. I’ve played with some other artists as a drummer and always have a place in my heart for Meow.

In your songwriting or composing, how do the compositions and songs take shape?
It’s different every time. Usually there’s a spark. Maybe a melody, lyric or chord and I’ll springboard off that and just see where it takes me. I try to stay fluid and never get too rigid during the creation. It’s easy to cling to things, but often the song will go to the right place if you follow where it’s taking you.

Where/when is your next gig?
No gigs currently planned, but it’s definitely on the agenda for the future!
