New Single: Danica Bryant

‘New Single’ is where a band or artist answers a couple of quick questions about their latest Single release. Up next is Danica Bryant, who has just released a new song Libra.

What is the song about lyrically?
‘Libra’ takes an astrology-themed angle on letting go of an ex-friend who’d justify their bad behaviour by their star sign. It’s a tongue-in-cheek catharsis, making fun of horoscope obsession but also genuinely celebrating it in a way.

Who produced/recorded it? Did the track come together in the studio, or at home?
The track was produced and recorded by my long-time collaborator Jonny Avery, who also produced my entire Ego Death EP. This year, even though we weren’t actively working on a project, we decided to have just a fun demo session with my partner Tyler Blythe, and see what happened naturally. We left with ‘Libra’, a light-hearted song that we truly didn’t mean to go anywhere. But we submitted the song to NZ On Air for kicks, and got our first funding! So suddenly it was a snap decision to get the song out into the world at top speed. I’m so grateful to have that validation and financial support from such a powerful Kiwi organisation, and to have such a thrilling story behind how ‘Libra’ made it out of the demo stage.

Were there any gear or effects that you used in the mix to get the sound you were after?
My favourite little details in the mix are the sparkly synths buried deep to sound spacey and fit the theme. There’s also a whisper on the line “curse the Gemini who speaks your name”, which really adds some rage and power to the otherwise almost overly saccharine, sarcastic style of the song.

Is this a stand-alone track or part of an upcoming album or EP?
‘Libra’ is a one-off single to keep building my discography and reputation, and establish that classic pop-rock Danica Bryant sound!
