The Eighth Note: Serebii

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next is Callum Mower, an artist, producer, mixing engineer, and multi-instrumentalist who records under the moniker Serebii.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Kia ora, my name is Callum Joshua Mower, I am a 27 year old musician living in Aotearoa. I have recently moved from Wellington to Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland, where I have set up a home studio in Titirangi. I decided to spend winter writing new material for a second album instead of preparing/playing live.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
My debut Album ‘Inside’ is out 15th September! My latest single ± is out now…

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
The best places for people to follow & find my music would be Instagram,
Bandcamp & Spotify.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Three most influential albums to me growing up would be with out a doubt:
1. Prince – Prince
2. Bob Marley – Exodus
3. Bootsy Collins – Ahh.. The Name Is Bootsy, Baby!

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Three Wellington musicians I’d love to work with would be Kat Little, Macho Macho & Rachel Andie.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
My favourite Wellington venue to play over the years has been Meow. But I must say Vogelmorn takes the cake, it’s so intimate and the team that run the community group there are the best. I’m actually yet to play there!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Recently my songs have taken shape through recording improv vocal ideas in voice memos on my phone while listening to rhythms, I’ll then figure out chord progressions afterwards. It’s usually the other way round but I got stuck so I flipped the approach around, haha.

Where/when is your next gig?
I’m in no rush to perform live as I am focused on writing and recording atm… but keep an eye out on my socials through out 2024!
