The Eighth Note: Bleeding Star

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next is Jude from new band Bleeding Star.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
My name is Jude Savage and I play guitar, sing and write songs with Bleeding Star. I have grown up in Wellington, and I’m in my last year of high school. Our music is kind of a marriage between melody and noise. I don’t know exactly where the songs come from, but I love it when they turn up.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We have just released a full length album called Dropper and are considering going into the studio to record another extended play. There are about 30 songs in the bank we are chipping away at so we are kind of desperate to get as much down as possible so we can get on to the next batch of songs. The latest songs are a bit more driven by pop sensibilities (when I say pop I mean catchy) but still have the same noise and power.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Bandcamp and Spotify, Apple Music… as well as all streaming platforms.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
1. Sugar – Beaster
2. Bailter Space – Vortura
3. Brilliant Swords – Fake a Little Kindness

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Shihad was the first concert I went to. It would be cool to work with them. We would love to connect to more like minded people. There’s a small group of bands around our age that play together, so there is a semi-scene but we want to break into the next tier as soon as we can to expand our audience.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Our favourite venue so far… well, as a group of teenagers we are pretty much playing halls. We have loved the Pyramid Club and Meow and thought the sound at Moon Bar was awesome. We are looking forward to playing San Fran with Eyegum on June 21st.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I usually start recording ideas in my bedroom with an old zoom recorder. I share demo ideas with the band and we work them out in the practice room. Carlos has been contributing a few songs too which is cool.

Where/when is your next gig?
We have a gig coming up at Moon with Debt Club, on the 8th of June!
