The Eighth Note: Welcomer

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next is Miles from Welcomer.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Miles Sutton from Welcomer. I’m a songwriter and musician living in Wellington.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We released an EP of 5 songs late last year as well as a few collaborations with other artists (Skymning, Raiden Freeman, Synthetic Children etc). This year is all about writing the album.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Wherever you normally listen to music (Bandcamp, Spotify etc) and you can follow us on Instagram or Facebook.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
This is hard! When I was 16, top 3 was probably:
Shocking Pinks – Shocking Pinks
Romance is Boring – Los Campesinos!
Form – Die! Die! Die!

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Womb.

What ís your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
The Welsh Dragon has been hosting bands the last couple of years which has been great. Venues calendars can get booked up very quickly in Wellington and the Welsh is doing well to offer an alternative space to artists.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band ís songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Words first usually! A lot of writing. There has to be something good on the page for me to keep pulling at it. There has to be something that feels true and worth it. It’s work though, I don’t believe in waiting for it to hit. It hits when you’re working and open to it hitting. I’m always watching and writing. Always on job as Asher [Skymning] reminds me.

Where/when is your next gig?
Newtown Festival!
