New EP: Crying Club

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next are Crying Club, who have just released their second EP, Big Water Bottle.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
We started work on the Big Water Bottle EP right at the beginning of 2022 and had been working on it for approximately one year. We recorded the drums with Sam at Undercroft Studios and recorded everything else ourselves at home/in our practice space.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
Our guitarist Isaac did all the mixing and mastering. For a lot of the time we would all be hanging out while working on the EP coming up with new ideas etc. and working out exactly what songs we wanted on it and in what order. Most of these decisions were quite unanimous which made life very easy for us all!

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
Absolutely! The fact that we did all the mixing and produced ourselves on top of that meant that we had all the time and space to experiment with a ton of different sounds and ideas.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
All the guitars were recorded through Axe-FX II, the bass was recorded partially through an Aguilar TH500, partially through a DP3X pedal, and vocals were recorded with a SM58 Beta microphone.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
Nothing in particular, but this was a selection of our songs that we thought worked well together and made a lot of sense together sonically.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
This EP was intended as a separate entity and meant to capture where we were in our lives at the time of recording. It reflects us well as of right now and may or may not influence the direction we head in in the future. As for growing an audience online, we are just stoked that people enjoy listening to it! It has had a great response and the feedback we have received so far is super encouraging!

Which digital platforms is it available on?
Available on all your typical streaming sites and also probably some of the ones you have never heard of! If you head over to our linktree you can find a link to whatever site you wish but here are a couple of the more popular links: Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud & Youtube.

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
Nah, nothing specific to this release – but we do have a whole lot of shows coming up where we will be playing most of the songs off the EP! First up we are supporting Melanie at Newtown Sports Bar on March 3rd, then Newtown Festival on March 5th, where you can catch us at the Ferguson St. stage at 12:30pm. You can find out all about them by checking out our social media which can be found here.
