The Eighth Note: The Shelves

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next are The Shelves, who recently released their debut EP ‘Shelflife’.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
The Shelves are Hugo (vocals/guitar) Jacob (guitars) and Francesco (drums), we make fun tracks inspired by our favourite surf punk/garage rock bands.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We just released our debut record “Shelflife” in July. We’ll likely start working on new music over the summer.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Our Instagram is a great follow and you can find our music on any streaming service. Check out our Linktree here.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Jacob: Silverchair – Frogstomp
Francesco: Green Day – Dookie
Hugo: Velvet Underground – Velvet Underground
All these are a long way away from our sound today but helped get us into music.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Would love to do a show with King Komodo and/or Rose Lubransky at some point in the future.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Definitely San Fran, can’t beat that famous green room.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Usually Jacob or Hugo get something started on guitar that we then mess about with as a whole band. Once we add to it and get the structure down we’ll figure out vocal melodies and lyrics.

Where/when is your next gig?
We’re playing on the 8th of October at Thistle Hall. Thanks to Playground Music for putting this lineup together, sure to be a good one.
