New Album: Wallace

‘New Album’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is ‘future-soul’ singer Wallace, who has just released her debut album + Other Colours, following on from her 2017 EP Pole to Pole.

When/where was the new album recorded?
This album has followed me around the globe for the past few years… Inception in Sydney, Covid side-stepping in a locked down London then finally settling and getting its final touches at home, Wellington, NZ.

Who produced/engineered the album? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
Lewis Moody (London) engineered the majority of the album and produced a few tracks along with PlaneFace (Sydney), Godriguez (Sydney), Dennis Neuer + Axel Reinemer (Berlin) Feiertag (Amsterdam), Yelderbert (Melbourne), Turbo Chook (Melbourne) + Danny Barwick (Melbourne) I recorded vocals at studios in Sydney, Melbourne, Berlin and London.

How did the songwriting happen? Are there any overall themes within the songs/album?
‘Wallace + Other Colours’ is a love letter to my favourite hues, linking my very visual way of moving through the world with the abstract, sonic space I love. I like to think of this album as a colourful glimpse into my mind. I’ve collaborated with an eclectic mix of producers for this project so it takes you on a bit of a ride through all corners of my brain.
In the past I’ve shied away from being too vulnerable in my song writing, choosing to hide behind stories so there’s a bit of distance. Recently though I’ve been breaking down those walls a bit and realising how cathartic it is to express myself and tell my own stories. Songs like Orchid Care, Every Stroke and Jane Doe are very personal, dealing with loss, anxiety and love. On the flip side though there’s still some playful songs like my nostalgic bop Arcade Queen, Ok, Ok What’s Next? My nod to The West Wing (one of my comfort shows) and Tickled Pink my elevator diss track.

Were you going for a different sound/approach on this album?
This is my debut album so I really wanted to explore all the corners of me. It’s quite eclectic sonically but my strange vocals seem to link it all together.

Is there a particular single/track that you feel captures the essence of the album?
I think the opening track Venus, The Birth Of really sets the scene well, produced by my long term collaborator and friend PlaneFace. It’s one of my favourites.

Is there a physical copy available? If not which digital platforms is it available on?
I currently have vinyl available! Which you can purchase via Bandcamp.

Are you working on a video/videos for any of the songs? Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
Hoping to make a couple of videos before the year is through and have shows in Wellington + Auckland next week.
26th August – Meow, Wellington
27th August – The Tuning Fork, Auckland
