The Eighth Note: CORTR

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.
Up next is Electronic producer CORTR.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I’m CORTR, an electronic music producer now based in Auckland who started in Wellington. I mainly focus on melodic bass music, trying to incorporate the more grunge and emo music taste I had growing up.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
So much! Very lucky to have been on a bit of a creative spree this year so I’m sitting on some of my best work so far and I can’t wait to put more of it out. I try to release once a month and I’ve stuck to that all year so far.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
You can find me at @cortrmusic on basically every platform, but my Soundcloud has all my unofficial work as well. [Spotify, Instagram].

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Honestly they weren’t electronic projects at all, I would probably say Linkin Park’s first two albums Hybrid Theory and Meteora and then Three Days Grace self titled album Three Days Grace. They were everything I loved, a blend of hard hitting metal and incredible vocals.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
This ones an easy question, someone I’ve already worked with and one of my best friends, MICA. He’s so ridiculously talented and I’d work with him a hundred times if I could.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
My first every show was in Bettys Bar so that place will always be my favourite venue in Wellington.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I’m always wanting my music to have an emotional feeling so I usually start writing melodies that pull at my heart strings a bit and make me feel something, I often find myself satisfied when a song sounds like its almost gasping from breath and just getting free. If a record can convey that same kind of tortured feeling that I heard in a lot of metal music growing up then I’m happy!

Where/when is your next gig?
With covid everything is a bit up in the air! But I know I’ll be back in Wellington in the new year. Until then I have some Auckland shows lined up: HERE presents: CORTR | Impala, Nov 27th at Impala Nightclub.
