The Eighth Note: Levi

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.
Up next is Wgtn DJ Levi.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I’m Levi and I am a Wellington based female DJ. I love Drum and Bass and I started learning to DJ about four years ago, however I only really got into it around June 2019 when I brought my own equipment. Then in January in 2020, I played my first set live and the rest is history! I love being able to find music that get’s me amped, then to play it out and hear the crowd get hyped about it to… that’s the best feeling in the world! My favourite gig I have played so far by far would be opening for State of Mind at the Breaking Beats Winter Meltdown in July 2020.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
The biggest thing I have been working on lately is pulling together a all female dnb dj night. It was pretty tricky as finding females who mix is quite hard, let alone females who play purely drum and bass. But I am stoked to have gotten 5 other girls (6 including myself) from around the country, to play on Wednesday the 7th of October at Betty’s from 10pm. It’s free entry and Wellington very rarely has anything like it, so no excuses not to come really!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Facebook, Instagram & Soundcloud.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
When I first started listening to Drum and Bass in 2013/14, the most influential albums that got me into the genre would have to have been Mr Cover Up EP by State Of Mind, Dark Days EP by Alix Perez and not a EP, but the song Marka by Dub Phizix and Strategy. All game changers!

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
There’s so many good Producers and DJ’s in Wellington at the moment so it is really hard to chose! I’m all about the female empowerment movement at the moment and equality in the scene, so I am really looking forward to seeing all of the girls play at the female takeover. Also love working with Paige Julia who taught me how to DJ, and SAFE (Now Haven – DnB) – and have a gig coming up with them at Laundry on the 17th of October so that will be awesome!

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Honestly you can’t beat working with Breaking Beats and playing at San Fran – still fizz from that Winter Meltdown gig!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I have only just started learning how to produce and it is still very early stages, at this point I am just chucking different sounds together to see what works and what doesn’t. Maybe in a year or so I can give a better answer haha!

Where/when is your next gig?
Wednesday 7th October: Betty’s Function House & Bar – Drum N Betty’s – Female DJ Takeover
