The Eighth Note: Scorn Of Creation

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

New Death Metal band Scorn Of Creation are a seasoned collective of some of New Zealand’s most crushing live acts that have come together to form a brutal new project. Today’s guest’s are Guitarist Seth (ex Bulletbelt), Bassist George (ex Backyard Burial, The Dauntless) & Vocalist Kris (ex Mindfuck).

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Seth:
We are Scorn Of Creation, a Wellington New Zealand based Death Metal band consisting of a collection of seasoned, NZ musicians. We play an aggressive brand of traditional Death Metal, crossed with a modern flavour and some other stylistic influences scattered throughout.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
George:
We just recently finished recording our debut self-titled album, which is being released 02.02.18, through Deadboy Records/Universal Music. Our first single “Realisation” is available now on iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Facebook & YouTube.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Kris:
Our Facebook page. Alternatively, we have a single currently available on iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify. Our album will also be available on those platforms from 02.02.18. We are also on Instagram, Youtube & Twitter.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Seth:
Just three? For me, I’d say…
Carcass (Heartwork), Morbid Angel (Domination), Cryptopsy (None So Vile). There were so many more, it’s hard to narrow it down, but those three definitely stood out to me. I’ll throw in; Dying Fetus (Killing On Adrenaline) for good measure.
Kris:
It’s hard to pick just 3, but a couple of my favourite albums are:
Cannibal Corpse (Tomb of the mutilated), Cradle of Filth (Cruelty and the beast), Cage (Hells Winter).
George:
Three albums that shaped my tastes in regards to death metal a lot would be – Vile (Depopulate), Origin (Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas) and Morbid Angel (Gateways to Annihilation).

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Seth:
Well, funny you ask. Because we’ve actually featured two Wellington musicians on our album. We have featured vocals from Jolene Tempest (Bulletbelt, Pariah & Zirconium) and Dan Birrell (Carnal). They each feature in one track and have been an awesome addition to the album.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Seth:
For me personally, I really enjoy Valhalla.
Kris:
Yea, either Valhalla or San Fran.
Seth:
The reason it’s Valhalla for me, is that it’s a very relaxed, but also professional venue. You’re looked after by the staff and owner, plus they never charge a booking fee. Great for the local scene and international bands coming over. Highly recommended!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Kris:
I wrote the lyrics as a concept and each song is a chapter in the story. It’s the story of a man losing his faith and exploring hell. I got some of my inspiration from Dante’s Inferno.
Seth:
So far, George and I put together the structure of a song, we then record that to a click track and send it out to the other members to write their parts. We finalise this as a group once a song is 90% finished, then we polish the song together. So far, this process has been the most productive and enjoyable of any band I’ve been part of.

Where/when is your next gig?
Kris:
Our next gig is for our album release in Wellington on 02.02.18 at Valhalla. We’re playing alongside Order Of Diptera, Dark Divinity and Silent Torture who are coming down from Auckland to play. After that, we’re opening for Cattle Decapitation in Auckland only a few days later at The Kings Arms on Feb 8th.
