New EP: Cave Circles

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest EP release. Up next is Riki Gooch (AKA Cave Circles & DJ OBOE) whose EP ‘Apricity’ was released in August via Wonderful Noise (Osaka).

When/where was the new EP recorded?
I recorded the EP mostly at home and it took about 3 years to complete. I had about 80+ tracks for it that I reduced down to 6.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
I had a bunch of synths and drum machines, drum kit at home I would play with. At one stage I had set up everything in the kitchen because I had run out of room. I produced the EP and the final mix was done by Lee Prebble and the mastering by Kelly Hibbert.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
I went for the EP length because I was pressing to vinyl for both of my releases this year. The shorter the length, the better the sound quality.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
I mostly used the ASR-10 for a lot of the rhythmic beds by sampling real drums into it. I would also use the SP-404 to compress and effect certain things. I was working within Protools as the main recording platform. I had also borrowed the Sequential Circuits Drum-Trax drum machine. It was a bit faulty and it would skip a beat every now and then. It had a charm to it. You can hear it on the track Gardens.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
The EP was written for my son, Kiva.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
I think it there is so much music out there in the strata that it is good to keep it short and sweet. That is the positive aspect of the EP format. I am not against albums, they still have a place and I plan to do one next year for L.A. based label, Secret Angels.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
Bandcamp.

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
We are doing the release of my EP Apricity on the 27 Oct at Caroline
And here is a promo clip made by brother Max:

And a video made by my other brother Ben.
