NZMM: Favourite Wellington Music Moment – MC Choirboy

For New Zealand Month last year we asked a bunch of people what they thought made Wellington music unique as well as what their favourite albums by Wellington artists were.

This year we thought we would do something similar, but slightly different. This time we’re asking people for a favourite memory of making music in Wellington. It could involve a favourite gig, a funny story from the recording studio, a moment that led to the inspiration for a song, the fond recollection of a defunct venue, or the piece of music or lyric that they are most proud of creating.

Up today is Rap MC/Lyricist MC Choirboy from Wainuiomata, who also records under the name Yahu.

My fondest memories of Wellington music are as follows:

Busking on Cuba street and Courtney place with Porirua’s Afakasi MC (from Chemistry Boiz); posing as roadies, to get in to an R21 bar to open for the rock bands Caris and Straight Up, who were Wellington’s first rap/metal core bands in the early 90s; and getting to the semi- finals of wellington rock quest.

But what blew my mind was watching DJ Mu from Fat Freddy’s Drop mix the original Trinity Roots live! Other great moments were freestyling with Imon Star from Olmecha Supreme and opening for Wellington’s Footsouljahs.

I still record albums twenty years later and have opened for and recorded with Upper Hutt Posse.
My artist name is MC Choirboy. For my music check out my page.
