The Eighth Note: Ash Broke

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Ash Broke from Hip-Hop collective OneRoof.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music?
I go by the name of ASH BROKE, I represent ONEROOF. My music is basically stories of my life and is a way for me to talk about things I couldn’t talk about in conversation, it is my type of self-therapy.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I am currently working on a new album with Hazbeats (YGB) called ‘Hate being Broke’. I am also working on a side project with other local artists including Simloco, Innocent Max, Koast, Hugh Tanner, Dylz & D1m3, MC Dro, Myles Murphy, and Bound2Smoke.

Where is the best place people can find you and your music?
Bandcamp.

What were the three most influential albums to you growing up?
DMX – It’s dark and hell is hot.
Tupac – Greatest Hits.
Notorious B.I.G – Life after Death.

Which other Wellington artists would you most like to work with?
Louis Baker and Raw Collective.

Your favourite Wellington venue to play?
It’s always been Bodega for me, it’s a hard one to top.

In your song writing, how do the songs take shape?
I try to find a beat that evokes a feeling or an emotion. Then I try and draw on something from my personal life that correlates with the vibe of the beat. Then I will rinse the beat on repeat until I start to see the picture clearer

Where/when is your next gig?
DMC 18 DJ Championship Sept. 8th at The Grand.
