The Eighth Note/New EP: Rose Lubransky

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians, and ‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release.

It’s a chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is punk-pop singer/songwriter Rose Lubransky, who has just released her debut EP.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
I am Rose Lubransky. I am an Onslow College student who has been into music since before I can remember. I grew up listening to Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5, Fleetwood Mac and Foo Fighters. My music captures some of that. My music is quite intense at some points but quite sweet in others. I believe the genre of my music is pop rock, more on the pop side.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I have been working on building my original song repertoire up and I have just released an EP on the 20th of April.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
My EP was recorded in January of 2017.

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
My EP was record by a good friend called Jake Stokes. He put it all together but then we chose to send it to Australia to be mastered.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
No, I didn’t really write songs specifically for the EP. I had been writing songs for a while beforehand. There were a few songs that I would have loved to have put on here but they didn’t make the cut. Maybe they’ll be on a future album.

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
Not on this EP but I’ve been experimenting with some cool things lately like a Koauau (Maori bone flute.)

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
No there isn’t. It was just how the songs and selection formed.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
I definitely see this as a progression towards an album. I have more songs that would complement the already existing songs.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
It will be available on almost all platforms. It will be on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon, YouTube Music and over 150 other platforms.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
I have a Facebook page where I post about all my gigs and an Instagram where I post gig photos and YouTube videos. I also have a YouTube channel. My music is also accessible on all music sites – Spotify, iTunes etc. All you have to do is search Rose Lubransky.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
The three most influential Albums I had growing up were Let Go by Avril Lavigne, The Dance by Fleetwood Mac and One of the Boys by Katy Perry.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
I would love to work with Fat Freddy’s Drop. They are an amazing band and I grew up going to the Jazz services at St Peters watching some of them play. It was mesmerising and inspiring!

What is your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
I haven’t played many venues around Wellington yet, but I have to say I love playing at Valhalla. It’s been such a supportive place and its very good for someone who is just starting out, and for those who aren’t!

In your song writing or composing (or the bands song writing) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I find that I like to write my lyrics first. It’s not often just “Hey today I’ll write a song”, although sometimes it is. It’s more like “oh that’s a cool idea,” and expanding from that. Sometimes I start singing and shape the lyrics and music around that one melody line. I can go weeks without writing a song and some days I can pop out more than one in a day.

Where/when is your next gig?
We did a gig on April the 20th at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, for the release of my EP. I was joined by three bands that have supported my journey and have looked up to as I’ve gone through this process. They are Lucifer Gunne, Phat Krunk and MISHAP.
More gigs to come!
