The Eighth Note: Miharo Gregory/Nation

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is the multi-talented vocalist & Keyboard player Miharo Gregory, who is also the frontman of Soul/Pop group Nation.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
My name is Miharo, I’m a singer, song writer, keyboardist and also the frontman/ yarner for the band Nation. Music is my way of filtering life and through song writing I learn more about the way I live within myself and the world. Life can be happy, heart-breaking, reflective, regretful, fleeting.. I want to paint as many colours of that spectrum as possible. That mind set encourages me to experience as much life as I can and write stories about it. With lots of funk.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I have been writing a few songs but the main project that’s been happening is
Nation’s new EP. It’s called ‘Pop Vulture’ and it’s coming out early 2018. I’m really happy with it and I’m also very thankful to be in a band with such talented cats! We had a lot of fun with it and got experimental on some of the songs. It’s great to have the single ‘Summer’ out there finally!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
You can find me wandering the streets of Kilbirnie most days but @Miharoboaz will get you to me on Facebook and Instagram, while @nationbandnz should find Nation on both platforms as well. [Nation:Facebook, Instagram].

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Don’t know if I could name three albums but three artists that inspired my song writing would be Ben Harper, Van Morrison and Muse.

Single, May 2017

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
A Wellington artist I really like is Sea Mouse! Seamus has a few songs I wish I wrote and I’m actually doing a few things with him now so there you go! I’m a fan of Tunes of I and Louis Baker as well but don’t really know what I can offer there.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Favourite Wellington venue is the streets.

S/T EP, 2016

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
If I’m writing songs for the band I usually come up with a lil morsel on the keys and the band throws their ideas in and it becomes a draft. Otherwise I make a whole simplified version of the song on Logic so the band can get the idea and then they make their parts better. Sometimes lyrics come first, but mostly the music and the song’s theme.

Where/when is your next gig?
My closest solo non-cover gigs are on the 6th of December (opening for Skymachine on their secret spots tour) and on the 8th of December (opening for Archie the Brave at Caroline). I’m sure Nation will announce a killer summer tour as well ;).
