The Eighth Note: Physical

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Julia Parr (Black City Lights) who is part of new duo Physical, along with Nik Brinkman (Over The Atlantic, Junica), who released their debut album ‘Ride It Out’ in August.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are Physical, we write songs to wake up to & break up to & work out to.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’ve been focusing on our live set, playing some support shows. We sat on this album for about a year before releasing it so it’ll be exciting to start writing some more music soon.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
We’re on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Soundcloud – what ever you prefer!

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
If we’re going right back… my mum had this Putumayo world music album called Celtic Women of the World that I remember vividly and my dad had a copy of Prince Diamonds and Pearls that I loved as a kid. Also I have to put Spiceworld up there – still listening to this day.
Nik remembers his earliest influences being Crowded House – Woodface, Queen – Greatest Hits 2, and Michael Jackson – Dangerous.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
We’re excited to play a gig with Josie Moon and Nik’s been writing some tracks with her. I really admire Estère, she is honestly one of the most talented women I know.

What is your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
We’re loving the Meow refurb and we haven’t yet played at Caroline, but really enjoy going to gigs there. We really miss Mighty Mighty and Puppies and Watusi even… They were amazing venues with such great energy.

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Nik will start with a stem of a chord progression, some basic synths and a vibe and I work in some meaningless melody and mould it into words, then we pull it all together and polish it up.

Where/when is your next gig?
Nov 25th at Caroline with Waterfalls and Josie Moon!
