While we look forward to ComicFest 2024, meet Ned Wenlock in this “5 minutes with” interview.
What first got you interested in comics?
I couldn’t tell you, I’ve always been drawn to comics, something about their graphic nature really appeals.
What is your average day like?
I work from home – I have a tiny office in our house. Animation and illustration with a bit of design work from time to time. I normally get started by 10am and work through to 4pm with a small break for lunch. Sometimes I work in the evenings too.
Can you tell us about a current or recent project you’ve worked on?
I recently drew the first chapter (20 pages) of a long winding story I started writing when I was sick with Covid. But whether it was the influence of covid or something else it was all too bleak, and I had to abandon it. Not very exciting I know but I find many personal projects burn out before they get finished.
Do you have any traditions or rituals that help you when you get to work?
Sometimes I write a list of things I need to do the night before so that when I sit down at my desk in the morning I don’t have to think too much, I can just do.
Who/what is your biggest influence or inspiration?
Herge and Mickey Mouse.
What or who are your favourite NZ comics or creators?
So many but currently I’m enjoying @deadfacecomics on Instagram and have just noticed the charming cartoony drawings of Austin Milne, also on Instagram.
What is your dream comic project?
Having the time to delve into a graphic novel. Working on Tsunami was a dream.
What are you excited to share with ComicFest attendees? Just a taster!
I’m excited to delve into the origins of my personal cartoon style, and only because it was all very deliberate and had a lot to do with quantity over detail, which might be helpful to some.
