New Single: Soft Plastics

‘New Single’ is where a band or artist answers a couple of quick questions about their latest Single release. Up next are Soft Plastics, whose new single Day Job is out today.

What is the song about lyrically?
‘Day Job’ is about disliking the 9 to 5 grind. It’s not about a specific job but just working in general, and feeling dissatisfied with what you’re doing. It’s not supposed to be taken too seriously and the music video helps reinforce that!

Who produced/recorded it? Did the track come together in the studio, or at home?
Jono came up with the rough demo of the song and brought it to us at practice. We thought the song was super catchy and Sophie added the vocal melody and lyrics. We recorded ‘Day Job’ with James Goldsmith at The Surgery Studio last year and finished with overdubs at his home studio. It was our first time working on a song with James from start to finish. Initially the bridge was an instrumental section but he convinced us to write a fun spoken word part and an additional melody, inspired by Dry Cleaning!

Were there any gear or effects that you used in the mix to get the sound you were after?
We wanted it to be quite BIG sounding so there are quite a few layers of fuzz guitars, with phasers on some of the guitars to give this kind of swirling, moving feel. It’s quite a ‘poppy’ song too, which you can hear in the added backing vocals and the upbeat disco beat. Other than that there is a cheeky Roland Saturn synth that appears from the bridge onwards to support the guitars and add a more garage feel.

Is this a stand-alone track or part of an upcoming album or EP?
This song is a stand alone single! However we have been working on our debut album with James Goldsmith so you can expect more songs soon…
