The Eighth Note: Birdcage

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next is Birdcage, who released their first EP earlier this year.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
Birdcage. An ever growing collection of young people wanting to rock. Our music sounds like a broken Carvin MX1222 struggling to stay alive. Quite literally. If anyone has an old mixing desk they don’t need please get in touch – 0224289348.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
Recently we’ve been writing new material for possibly another EP or an album if we write enough music, I guess we’ll see what happens. Asides from writing we plan to record and release 2 singles that we wrote last year. At the moment it’s looking like it could be ‘Flowers’ and ‘Alone With My Thoughts’, but personally I’d be keen to try one of our new ones that is currently being called ‘All Over The Place’ – although rumour has it a new title is in the works. On a side note listen to Mushroom by Can – fantastic drumming.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Bandcamp. (Also all the other places but bandcamp=best)

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
I don’t know about the rest of the band but for me it would be:
AC/DC – High Voltage
AC/DC – Powerage
AC/DC – Highway to Hell

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
I’d love to make a compilation album with Wellington bands to celebrate our scene and capture this moment in time. There’s so much great music being made here that deserves to be recorded and remembered.

What is your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
San Fran and Valhalla equally.

In your songwriting or composing (or the bandís songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
There’s no real set structure to how things happen in this band. The songs seem like they just come from wanting something to do and wanting to feel excited. It’s an outlet for us to do whatever we want and play on instruments we don’t usually play and I feel our songwriting represents that. The band is a manifestation of friends who are musicians purely wanting to enjoy themselves (and maybe a little bit to feel lock rockstars).

Where/when is your next gig?
Been asking the same question.
