The Eighth Note: Crash Bandihoot

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music. Up next are brass ensemble Crash Bandihoot.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We’re Crash Bandihoot – a colourful 7 piece New Orleans style brass band based in Welly. I guess we technically play Jazz but we call it Hornfunk as that feels more accurate. We’re all about fun really, we dress up and climb on stuff and parade around. We play well but don’t take it too seriously!

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’re just getting our first EP of originals together to record this Autumn, we’re off to play in Australia in July so would really love to have something to take on the tour to share over there too. I think it’s going to include a bonus brass mashup of X Gonna Give It To Ya with Whats The Time Mr Wolf, which should be fun!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
Jump on our socials – Facebook and Instagram, might get a website soon but till then…

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Ooooof that’s a tricky one as all 7 of us will have different ones haha, instead I’ll give you 3 albums that heavily influence how the band plays now –
Rebirth Brass Band – Ultimate Rebirth Brass Band
Hot 8 Brass Band – Rock With The Hot 8
Pocket Aces – In My City

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Ahhhh haha probably all different for all of us again, for me personally (Pi) I’d say King Homeboy – full brass band and his rapping would be so sick.

What is your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
We love to play in places people might not expect, we played at The Welsh Bar for last years Jazz Festival and it went off! Fully maxed out people couldn’t get in the door so you can imagine the vibe. Next one is at R Bar which is such a cool space, we’re gonna be performing standing on a pirate ship, not sure it gets better than that??

In your songwriting or composing (or the band is songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
We’re just fully getting into the composing now, it’s normally someone will bring a groove and we’ll all just build and arrange from there, jam it out a bit and see where it goes.

Where/when is your next gig?
This Saturday (April 9) we’re at R Bar, looks like it’s going to sell out again the 100 tickets this week (fingers crossed) so that’ll be a brass band pirate party to remember. We’ve got Dan Untitled playing before us too, we were hoping to have his new six-armed human-sized robotic drummer that’s controlled by modular synthesisers but it’s not quite ready(look out for that one though) but his set will be incredible too. And a big shout out to Tarns Hood who did poetry at our last gig at Moon, absolutely killed it. We always try to have a great lineup with interesting things, so if you see a Crash Bandihoot gig listed anywhere – you know it’s going to be a fun night.
