New EP: Belladonna

‘New EP’ is where a band or artist answers some questions about their latest release. Up next is Belladonna, who released new EP, ‘Total Eclipse of my Brain’, late last year.

When/where was the new EP recorded?
I recorded the ep last year up in Auckland!

Who produced/engineered the EP? How did the tracks come together in the studio, or at home?
On all the music I’ve released so far I’ve worked with producer Shannon Fowler. He has little studio up on Karangahape road where we make the tunes. Usually we start off with some drums and guitar, and from then we play around find something we like.

Did the shorter format of an EP give you the option to experiment in any way with your sound or with different forms of song-writing?
Good question! I think it does offer a chance to experiment with a few different sounds. It was a cool chance to try different production styles and I had lot of fun doing that!

Was there any specific gear you used to capture that?
For my writing at least, I like to limit what I use when creating. I find these limitations push me to create in new ways.

Is there a particular track or theme that the EP was formed around?
In this EP I didn’t focus on one theme throughout, however at the time I was thinking a lot about my hometown Hamilton and about what I want out of the relationships in my life.

Where do you see the EPs place in growing an audience online? Do you see it as a progression towards an album or a separate entity?
I’m actually working on an album at the moment, which I’m super excited about!! I think the EP bridges a nice gap to what I’m working on currently.

Which digital platforms is it available on?
You can listen on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and a few others!

Are you doing any gigs or promotion for its release?
In these covid times I’ve been focusing on writing a lot more! But hopefully soon I’ll get back into the swing of live performing.
