New Single: Taylah

‘New Single’ is where a band or artist answers a couple of quick questions about their latest Single release. Up next is Taylah Barker, former lead singer of the band Oddjive, who has now focused on her solo career with the launch of her 2nd single Undies, which premiered in May. A video for the single came out last week, so we thought we would catch up with her to find out a bit more about it.

What the song is about lyrically?
‘Undies’ is about the fact that we (particularly women) get force-fed this idea that we need romantic validation to feel normal. This song is about wearing your most tatty, unflattering undies and not giving a damn about what you look like and what people will think. It’s pretty liberating to let go of those pressures and hopefully this song helps to inspire a bit of self-love.

Who produced/recorded it? Did the track come together in the studio, or at home?
‘Undies’ was produced by the incredible Toby Lloyd at Tiny Triumph Recordings. It was an amazing experience because we did a lot of refining together in his studio and he’s able to make sense of my incredibly vague instructions. Like asking for something to sound more ‘glittery’ or to ‘add more fluff’ haha.

Were there any gear or effects that you used in the mix to get the sound you were after?
I always had it in my head that I wanted a section of this song to have that Got to give it up by Marvin Gaye feel to it. So I decided to fill a room with women, Trans and Non-Binary vocalists who relate to the ‘Undies’ message and just vibe together over the last chorus. It was my favourite part of the recording process and every time I hear it, I can’t help but smile.

Is this a stand-alone track or part of an upcoming album or EP?
Yes, ‘Undies’ is a stand-alone track. I’m staggering my singles at the moment because it’s a really fun way to approach recording. It allows me to build a whole world around each song and really indulge in the ideas that I create. I plan to release a few more singles and then start on my first album, which will be my most indulgent venture yet.
