The Eighth Note: Viices

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.
Up next is indie-rock artist Viices.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
My name’s Jake and I write and perform as Viices. This has been a solo project for a few years, but I’ve recently been playing with a couple of others which will make the live show a lot better! My music tends to be gloomy, indie rock.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
I’ve just released a new single called Double Denim, and it’s on vinyl as well! The B-Side of the vinyl will be released for streaming in a couple of months, so keep an eye out for that. I’ve also got another song in the works with some studio time booked for the end of this month.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
If you go to viicesmusic.com there’s links to all the usual social and streaming sites, as well as a link to buy the Double Denim 7″ vinyl.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Meteora by Linkin Park, Mode. Set. Clear. by Villainy and the Footrot Flats soundtrack by Dave Dobbyn and Herbs.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Too many to choose from – I’ve got a lot of time for Androgynous Lemon, Ingrid and the Ministers and Charlie Whack.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
I really like Valhalla – super grungy and a great setup on stage!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I often have bits and pieces of songs that float around for months until the time is right – in the lastest track that I’m recording next week, I wrote the guitar part over a year ago and only just figured out what I want the lyrics to be

Where/when is your next gig?
We’re aiming to do a gig with the full band early next year, but I might do a cheeky solo set somewhere to celebrate the vinyl release, so keep an eye out for that!
