The Eighth Note: Hadees Drudge

The Eighth Note is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians. A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.
Up next are Rock/Thrash Metal band Hadees Drudge, who released their debut album in August.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are Hadees Drudge. This band appeared on the Wellington music scene in late 2018. They have been rigorous in their promotion since then, including frequent gigs around North and South Islands. The aspect that listeners notice immediately is that this is a 4 piece band of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. That breaks the norm of so many bands in this genre that have 2 guitars. Beyond that, the interplay of drums, bass and guitar across the rhythmic structures produces their point of difference. It all works so well. The music is hard hitting, punchy, tight and on point with vocal lines that counterpoint the riffs. Its hard to describe beyond actually hearing them live, which you should do, as many times as possible. Hard Rock driven Metal Groove.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We have just released our 13 track debut album On your Knees . We have 6 songs ready for our second album as well as a 7th new track currently being written. We hope to release our second album possibly called ‘I See Myself’ by the end of 2021.

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
We are on Facebook, our most active platform at the moment. But we are also on Instagram for regular updates and YouTube/Spotify etc for more videos and streaming. CD’s and merch can be purchased directly via the band or through Bandcamp where you can also stream and/or buy CDs or digital downloads.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
To me personally I would say Skid Row-Skid Row & Motley Crue-Doctor Feelgood. My first 2 musical loves. Then I discovered Led Zeppelin III and Metallica Ride the Lightning. Felt like I had been hit with a sledge hammer.

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
From day one of Hadees Drudge Head Like a Hole have always been the dream band to play with. Their debut album 13 played live still rocks the clubs in a way few others can.

What’s your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
Valhalla is our local Metal Venue and we have had so many great nights there. Ben (The owner) has been a huge support to us and the relaxing atmosphere and people is second to none. The Welly metal scene rocks!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
I write all the songs as well as the lyrics. Every Riff or idea for a song gets recorded on my phone. When a song starts coming together I often go back through my recordings to find that one riff to use as a breakdown or pre chorus etc. Sometimes that riff that felt just wrong ends up fitting perfectly with the right riffs around it. Most of the songs I don’t spend time trying to write a certain genre I just let it come out naturally, and then let the rest of the band come together and add their own style, and that’s how we create our sound.

Where/when is your next gig?
Our album release party was in August at Valhalla Wellington. Next we are looking at Whanganui/Masterton 13th/14th November supporting BulletBelt on their NZ tour.
