New Single: Voodoo Bloo

Voodoo Bloo is the new project of Rory McDonald, who formed hard rock group Lucifer Gunne in 2017 when he was 15. He has just released a strong debut single MMA, from forthcoming album JACOBUS, out later this year.

What the song is about lyrically?
This song talks a lot about drunken culture in New Zealand, however I’m sure that no matter where you go in the world you will find characters like the one you see me portraying in “MMA”. You’ll know when you meet a “Moshpit Martial Artist”, they’re the person that lowers their inhibitions to unspeakable levels, in the hopes to find something more in a night on the town than just the bottom of the barrel. A friend who will give away their life story to total strangers in exchange for a round of pints, the someone who feels indestructible when they can hardly walk in a straight line.

Who produced/recorded it? Did the track come together in the studio, or at home?
This was recorded at PlasticGroove HQ Studios by Tony McDonald, this track had already been fleshed out from live performances in a previous act I played in, but was originally written by me in my room at home. Niel De Jong (Manager of Alien Weaponry) mixed and mastered this track in Hammerhead studios, and I could not be happier with the sound, it captures the raw punky energy I was after so well, and I think that this will be one of the most memorable tracks off the record.

Were there any gear or effects that you used in the mix to get the sound you were after?
Honestly with this one it was just a process of cranking up the overdrive as much as we could, trust me when I say this, “MMA” is LOUD, and we intended for it to be blasted at the highest volume.

Is this a stand-alone track or part of an upcoming album or EP?
This is the first of a few singles leading up to the release of my debut album “Jacobus”, which talks very in-depth about mental health, where I either play the character in question suffering with traits I believe to be harmful, or I speak for myself on how the mental state can be affected by your peers and how they’re feeling.
