The Eighth Note: Earth Tongue

‘The Eighth Note’ is 8 quick Questions with Wellington Musicians.

A chance for us to catch up with people & see what they’re up to, or introduce you to a new musician/band and their music.

Today’s guest is Ezra from Earth Tongue.

Who are you? Tell us a bit about your music:
We are a two-piece psych rock band from Newtown. We started the band as a bit of a side-project from our other bands (Mermaidens, Red Sky Blues, Onono) about eight months ago. From the start people responded to our live sets pretty well so we recorded an EP straight away and kept gigging. The music is psychedelic, groovy and heavy with a dynamic mix of female and male vocals.

What have you been working on lately? Any new tracks or albums on the way?
We’ve had a really great Summer of playing shows and festivals around NZ. We’ve been a bit too busy to write much lately but we’re planning on recording again very soon!

Where is the best place people can follow you & find your music?
earthtongue.bandcamp.com or Facebook.com/earthtongueband.

What were the 3 most influential albums to you growing up?
Queens of the Stoneage – Songs for the Deaf
Black Sabbath – Masters of Reality
The Datsuns – Out of Sight Out of Mind

Which other Wellington musician (s) would you most like to work with?
Frazer Dozer would be great to work with if I ever got the chance!

What ís your favourite Wellington venue to play in?
San Fran or Caroline at the moment!

In your songwriting or composing (or the band’s songwriting) how do the compositions and songs take shape?
Normally we’ll start with one riff, then decide what kind of image and feel the riff conjures up – then one of us will write lyrics accordingly. We don’t take it too seriously. It’s a fun project! The songs normally go through a few weeks/months of development before we’re happy with them!

Where/when is your next gig?
We’re playing on the Marion St stage at Cuba Dupa this weekend at 7pm! In May we’re playing at Space Place at the Carter Observatory as part of NZ Music Month which we’re really looking forward to!
