About Smoke:

Smoke was first published in 2024.

The book is, on one level, a traditional detective story set in Californian sierras and, on another, is a novel about fire, climate change, corruption and rural crime and its aftermath. The novel starts after a body is discovered in a shed after a harsh wildfire; initially it looks like an open and closed case, but could the fire have been used to hide a murder? And as Detective Alex Markov investigates further, she starts to uncover a tangled web of deceit and corruption.

The novel is immersive, fast paced and atmospheric, making for an intense, intelligent and compulsive read - a book readers of crime fiction crime will relish!

Michael Brissenden is an acclaimed author who has also worked in the field of international political journalism for more than thirty years. His novels include The List, Dead Letters, Smoke and his latest book, Dust, is due in August 2025. As a journalist he has worked in Washington, Moscow and Brussels and covered many of the biggest international stories of recent years. He has one non-fiction title to his name so far - American Stories: Tales of Hope and Anger. He also is on record as saying he wants to master the double bass one day.
