Bring your favourite films, TV shows, and games to life at the library these holidays! With programmes for all ages and interests, there's something for everyone.

We've put together a fantastic programme of events, all based on our favourite films, TV shows, and games. Craft your own mini TV, let loose with games inspired by your favourite blue TV dog, bring Minecraft to life with LEGO®, create your own stop-motion film, and much more!

Ongoing Activities

Borrow DVDs for free

For the duration of the school holidays, we've made all DVDs and Blurays free to borrow at Wellington City Libraries!

From your favourite whānau films to new releases, visit your local library and browse the shelves to choose your ideal holiday viewing.

  • This free offer applies to loans and renewals made from 20 September – 5 October only at any of our branches or online.
  • All usual age restrictions apply.

Trivia Quest: Gotta answer 'em all!

Pick up an answer sheet and search the library to find and answer a series of film and TV themed questions! Answer 'em all and you'll be rewarded with a special prize activity!

This activity is recommended for tamariki aged 6+ with their caregivers.

Search the library for hidden tiles and learn some new screen-related te reo Māori kupu.

Library Dress-Up Day

Visit the library on Wednesday 1 October and you’ll find our librarians dressed up as their favourite film or TV characters! Wear your own costume to the library or try to guess our costumes!

Scriptwriting workshops with Andrew Thomson

Calling all young playwrights and theatre enthusiasts! Perfect your writing skills with Andrew Thomson of The Academy of Dramatic Arts. In this workshop tamariki will work in small groups to write a script based on a one-page prompt. You bring the enthusiasm and creativity, we bring the pencils!

For ages 7–12 with their caregivers.

Whānau Film

Join us to settle in and watch a fantastic film from our library collection!

Movies chosen will have a G or PG rating and are suitable for families with young children. Contact the library or community centre to find out which movie is screening. 

This family-friendly event is suitable for tamariki of all ages accompanied by their caregivers.

Gotta be done!

Join us for a Bluey™ bonanza! 

Calling all parents with children who enjoy Bluey™! Get ready to dance and freeze in the whimsical world of musical statues! Watch your little ones showcase their coordination in the Keepy Uppy challenge, a delightful game that's as fun to play as it is to say. Immerse yourselves in the spirit of Bluey™ as we bring the animated series to life!

Paddington's Picnic

Come along to your local library to create a favourite snack for Paddington Bear! 
We will make a delicious marmalade sandwich and create a cover for it.  

Please note that supplies are limited so arrive early to secure your spot.

Craft your own TV Show: Mini TVs!

Join us at the library to make your own Mini TV, complete with your favourite TV show! Tamariki will use card, scissors, and pens to make their very own tiny TV and draw their favourite show.

For tamariki aged 4+ with their caregivers.

Craft your own TV Show: Puppets!

Join us at the library for puppet making and puppeteering!

Make puppets with paper, glue, googly eyes, and iceblock sticks, decorate them with felts and craft materials, then have a go at putting on a puppet "TV show" with our librarians and other children.

Let's Go LEGO®: Minecraft Special

Let’s build – let’s explore – let’s create! Come along to the library to create your ultimate Minecraft world out of LEGO®! 

Use our extensive LEGO® collection to bring your favourite game off the screen and into the library!

K-Pop Dance Party!

Vibing with your favourite demon hunter ramyeon (ramen) design lately or in the mood to bust a move to Soda Pop by Saja Boys? Join us at the library for an hour of fun celebrating Korean culture through stories, crafts, and DANCE. It’s GONNA BE, GONNA BE GOLDEN!  

For tamariki aged 6 to 10.

Make your own stop-motion film

Join us at the library for a crash course in creating stop-motion movie!  

Use a library device, LEGO®, and Stop Motion Studio to tell a story of your choice. Come along with your own idea or browse through our books and choose your favourite pūrākau to re-tell. 

This event is for young people aged 8+ with their caregivers. Registrations are required. Register through the links below.

Retro Gaming

Come join us for an afternoon of nostalgia or new experiences with old video games! We have consoles from a variety of decades for you to try out.

This is an age restricted event, suitable for young people aged 10+. 
Those under 14 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Themed Regular Programmes

Baby Rock and Rhyme: As seen on the screen

Come along to a special Baby Rock and Rhyme session where we've picked out a selection of tunes and rhymes from our favourite kids' TV shows.

Rhyme, rhythm, repetition and music are the building blocks of language for babies.

Recommended for children aged 0 – 2 years and their caregivers.

Dress-Up Storytime: As seen on the screen

Join us at your local whare pukapuka for a red-carpet-worthy selection of stories!

Be sure to dress up as your favourite movie / TV / on-screen character for the event – princesses, pirates, aliens, cartoon dogs, and everything in between are welcome!
