Introduction

Nga Waahi Taonga o Te Whanganui a Tara augments the historic Maori sites inventory in the Wellington City Council region, originally drawn up by Peter Adds and Maurice Love.

This inventory provides a supplement to the Maori heritage sites listed in the Proposed District Plan. Ultimately it is a collection of information which provides a quick reference guide to Wellington's tribal heritage landscape.

It is intended that this inventory will assist readers with information about individual sites. and provide an impression of the historical sweep of an area within which sites are found.

It should also be noted that material for this document has not drawn from oral tribal history. There is a strong though lessening reliance on Elsdon Best's The Land of Tara, which genealogist and historian J. M. McEwen describes in Rangitane as containing "a large amount of unreliable material." The abiding concern has been to set out "the facts" as much as possible so as to assist users of this inventory.

The inventory is a living document, and as all history is ultimately interpretation, is subject to amendment as new evidence arises. There is still, when finance permits, further research to be carried out.
