Captain John Nicholson, master on half-pay in the Royal Navy, had visited the Port (Wellington) in 1820 in the brig "Haweis." In January, 1821, Nicholson was appointed by Governor Macquarrie master attendant and harbourmaster at Sydney, a post which he held until his retirement. He was married at the age of thirty in St. Phillip's Church, Sydney, and had thirteen children. He died in 1863.

Colonel Wakefield's diary was given by the Colonel to his clerk, Mr. D. Lewis, who presented it to Mr. W. Tanner, who left it to the Turnbull Library.

The Khandallah Domain, comprising (a) an area of 31 acres, with access from Simla Crescent and Clarke Street, is Crown Land, the control of which is vested in the Wellington City Council. This is adjoined by a further (b) 7 1/4 acres, known as the Khandallah Reserve, in which the swimming pool is located, and was purchased in 1909 by the Onslow Borough Council for water supply purposes, and this again by (c) the Catchment Area, a block of 144 acres extending up to the Kaukau ridge.

In December, 1932, Lord Bledisloe, in pursuance of his interest in agriculture, founded the Bledisloe Challenge Cup (Ahuwhenua Trophy) for the encouragement of good farming in Maori Land Development Schemes. In addition to holding the Cup for a year, the best Maori farmer receives a medal, while to those gaining second and third place, a certificate to that effect is presented. Lord Bledisloe likewise founded the Viscount Bledisloe Silver Challenge Trophy for the garden, large or small, showing the best and most attractive use of New Zealand plants, due allowance being made for the ingenuity and resourcefulness which their employment in a small garden necessarily involves. The winner holds the Trophy for one year, and in addition, is presented with a gold medal by the Wellington Horticultural Society, which annually conducts the competition. "Bledisloe Benefactions" are endless.
