One of the most difficult things for parents is finding a good pukapuka for their child who has just finished an incredible series that kept them hooked for weeks (or perhaps more realistically, a few hours!) Well the library has got you covered! Starting with Percy Jackson “What comes next?” will provide suggestions for books tamariki might like if they enjoyed popular children’s fiction series.

Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series is one of the most popular children’s fiction series out there, and for good reason. Who doesn’t love monsters, gods, and a bunch of really cool kids saving the world? Finding something to read after such a great series is hard, but here are our top picks for what to read next. We haven’t included Rick Riordan’s other books, all of which are set in the same world as Percy Jackson, but if you haven’t read them yet then check out Heroes of Olympus (The continuation of Percy Jackson with Roman mythology), Magnus Chase (Norse mythology), The Kane Chronicles (Egyptian Mythology) and Trials of Apollo (A new adventure in the Percy Jackson world).

Younger Kids:

If you’re after more books with the same flavour as Percy Jackson but with mythology from a wide variety of cultures, then check out Rick Riordan Presents titles, we’ve picked two of our favourites which feature Hindu and West African mythology respectively. In need of a great atlas? Check out Maps. This is one of the most fantastic books I have ever come across. What is great about this atlas (and perhaps different from most atlases) is that not only does it contain information about geographical features and political borders, but also places of interest, iconic personalities, native animals and plants, local peoples, cultural events, and many more fascinating facts associated with each region. Great to use for geography homework.

Homemade play dough! Homemade watercolor paints! Homemade chalk! Homemade crayons!  I cannot believe my ears! Yes this book tells you how you can make those things in your own home and in your own time by using recycled materials to make toys and games . Other ideas (and some of my personal favorites include ankle bells, marble mazes and magnetic fishing games. You can have fun and do your bit for the environment at the same time. And just in time for the school holidays. Also holds some old favorites from Eco-friendly crafting with kids like creating musical instruments, like a box guitar and invisible ink. This book will make kids want to play with household objects, like a cardboard box rather than the latest (and sometimes expensive) toy.

Greek Myths.

Orpheus and Eurydice.

What is mythology? The Free Dictionary defines mythology as “a traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the worldview of a people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or delineating the psychology, customs, or ideals of society.” While the Oxford Dictionary defines mythology as “a collection of myths, especially one belonging to a particular religious or cultural tradition.”

If you are interested in Greek mythology and looking for shorter and easier myths to read than Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians”, then this story of Orpheus and Eurydice will  appeal to fans of that series. Shakespeare once said “the course of true love never did run smooth.” At least not for Orpheus and Eurydice. So when Eurydice is killed by a snakebite on her wedding day, her husband, Orpheus journeys to the Underworld to negotiate with Hades himself to win his bride back. Can true love triumph over the dark power of the Underworld? You’ll have to read the story to find out.
