Top 10 Children’s Comics June 2016

These are the all time favourite comics (well, for the last couple of months) from children choosing their reading material from Wellington Libraries! The listing hasn’t changed since last month, so here is a peek into the almost Top 10!

These two blue hued creatures almost made it into this month’s Top 10…

The Smurfs are June’s number 11 and Sonic, a sometime Top 10 listee is in at number 12. The cover for volume 8 Sonic Saga series is up on the Archie comics website.  Did you know that Sonic the Hedgehog holds a world record? Awarded with the accolade of longest running comic book series based on a video game by the Guinness book of World records 2008. Our Sega blue hero was turned blue after breaking the sound barrier.  Want to know more? Find 12 Sonic facts over here.

Asterix and Obelix have new creators, Conrad and Ferri!   With the blessing of the remaining Asterix creator Albert Udzero, these two are creating some great new adventures for our Gaulish heroes.

Summer holiday reading has paid off for Liz Pichon who has the potential to knock Diary of a Wimpy Kid out of the top spot with her amazing Tom Gates book series!

Wondering how authors become people who create stories? Lauren Child has a great website with some encouraging notes for those budding authors out there.  Ruby Redfort fans can pit their wits against code cracker for high security info or take the Spectrum test.  And… paper backs, check out the process for the cover shoots for Look into my eyes, Catch your death, Take your last breath and Feel the fear.

You Can Get Sucked Down An Aeroplane Loo!

If you like Ripley’s Believe it or not, then you will love this book. You Can Get Sucked Down An Aeroplane Loo! will allow you to explore the greatest urban myths, legends and tales of all time and will fill you in once for all whether they are true or false. In other words, this is the book that will teach you how NOT to be a sucker. Overall I enjoyed this book, which was a barrel of laughs. I don’t think you will be surprised of shocked over which blunders are false, however I think the ones that are true will surprise you.

Feel like a trip to the Ancient world? Be rest assured that you don’t have to call on Doctor Who to make sure the trip is possible when you have these awesome books right here. Usborne books have done it again with the Visitor’s Guide to Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome, that is packed with essential time tourist tips on anything and everything you need to know about the Ancient world.

Ancient Egypt covers a wide range of information on how to behave at an Egyptian party and how to make a mummy, while Ancient Rome advises you one what to eat, where to go and how to come back on one piece.

Why not check out this awesome handbook The Usborne Official Roman Soldiers Handbook, that provides all the helpful hints and tips on how to survive in Ancient Rome… and if you join the Roman Army. This book also reveals all the gruesome truths of life in the Roman army including what soldiers ate, what they wore and how they lived. Overall I think this book is an excellent read. I feel the witty illustrations complement the text which creates a friendly and accessible introduction to Roman history.

These books from Usborne series are ideal for anyone who is a fan of the Horrible Histories series and has a keen fascination for history.

Just joking 5.

Looking for a joke book that is not going to bore you with endless knock, knock jokes? Look no further. This book presents a variety of jokes and facts, including knock-knocks, tongue twisters, riddles, silly animal photos and traditional question and answer jokes. Overall, I think it’s a fantastic book. Loved the jokes. I even managed to have a go at the tongue twisters, some easy, others take a lot of concentration.

This is the time of the year when we all think of Celebrating Christmas. So here are a few books which look at the History of how Christmas has been celebrated throughout the last few centuries.

Horrible Christmas by Terry Deary.

This book looks at all kinds of unusual and possibly nasty things that have happened at Christmas over the centuries. It also gives us an idea of where things that we recognise as being for Christmas time come from, like fruit mince pies, Christmas Carol singing, how stuffing turkeys came about and what was eaten before then. It also talks about sick Christmas songs like: “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer”.

This is a very good book with lots of trivia information.

 

 

Christmas by Clare Chandler.

This book looks at the History of Christmas and how it is celebrated around the world. It also looks at the Customs related to Christmas. Very factual book.

The Story of Christmas by Barbara Cooney

This book looks at the birth of Jesus Christ and then other traditions related to Christmas. It also shows you how to make special Christmas biscuits and how to decorate clove oranges. There is also information about Santa Claus. This book has lovely illustrations.

The Fairy-Tale Princess : Seven Classic Stories from the Enchanted Forrest.

This beautiful collection of seven classic fairytales is organized around the theme of the fairytale princess. Su Blackwell’s paper sculptures evoke a magical world of beauty and mischief are accompanied by Wendy Jones’ lyrical retellings of the stories. I really liked how each fairy tale emerged from the pages through a series of intricate paper sculptures cut from the pages of  each of the fairytales. Our February BookSeeker meeting was full of laughs as we started off the new year with all things humourous. Jokes, rhymes, funny stories – it was all there.

We started the session by making our own jokes. Here are the instructions so have a go at making one yourselves!

  1. Make a list of animals and food. Call it List A
  2. Make a list of places you can go or things you can do. Call it List B
  3. Think of a word or phrase to describe the animals and food in List A.   Call it List C
  4. Think of a word or phrase to describe the places and things you can do in List B. Call it List D

Now make your joke.

What is ___________ and ___________?

Fill in the gaps with a word from List C and a word or phrase from List D.

Use the words from List A and B to make the punchline.

Here is an example

Question: What is Pink and burps?

Answer: A pig drinking a milkshake.

List A: Pig  List B: Drinking a milkshake  List C: Pink  List D Burping
