Top 10 Children’s e-Books January 2016

The new year’s e-books have some really popular titles.  It’s great to know that if you really want o read something you can get hold of a copy through your library, or your library’s online portal. Harry Potter is as strong as ever in this medium (pretty popular since we started the e-book Top 10).  J.K. Rowling has written a play with Jack Thorn and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the cursed child, opening in London in July this year.  It’s great to have an evolving story unfold since the last book came out.

Top 10 Childrens DVDs for January 2016

Road trips with DVDs? Turns out that it’s now a thing! There are some great DVDs in the Childrens collection to while away the easy summer hours. Our collection has classic series like Scooby-Doo and newer cartoon series following the Lego heroes of Chima, the ponies from the world of Equestria or the Strawberry shortcake gang.  Inside out from Pixar has had some great reviews, from the writer of Monsters, Inc., Wall-E and Up, Pete Docter, the little voices in Riley’s head are brought to life as she struggles with the move to a new city. The animation deserves a mention as Pixar uses a more cartoonish style this time round.  Heading to Tokyo in the next few months? you can catch the Pixar exhibition at The Museum of Contemporary Art

There are some great new movies in December’s popular DVDs. Paper Planes is an Australian production that shows the joys of invention and team work (and how to make a cool paper aeroplane). Minions – the movie – shows the great and terrible journey the Minions had to follow to find their evil master mind Gru. Want to find your own Minion? Top 10 Children’s DVDs October 2015

My Little Pony has been the most popular Children’s DVD for the last six months! Number two favourite, Shaun the sheep has been involved in a great art trail in London and Bristol called Shaun in the City.  Different artists painted up Shauns that were stationed all over the cities.  There was even a Sherlock Shaun! Just in time to finish up the school holidays!

The favourites are holding strong in the latest top ten.  Paddington just scrapes in.

If you enjoyed the Paddington movie take a look at the books we have by the original author Michael Bond.  A brand new piece of work from the venerable 88 year old author, Love from Paddington has just arrived in the library and is being prepared for borrowing!  The book is filled with letters of Paddington’s impressions of London life.   The Peruvian bear is a bit of a mascot for Paddington railway station in London, U.K.  Last year celebrity painted versions of the famous statue were dotted all around London fro the Paddington Bear trail. Take a look at these designs and see if they inspire you to create your own!

Top 10 Children’s DVDs August 2015

Fairy tales retold makes number four in August’s children’s movie faves. Cinderella has gone through so many adaptions! This is latest from Kenneth Brannagh as director (he did the first Thor movie) features a stella cast with Helena Bonham-Carter as the fairy godmother and Kate Blanchette. Brannagh is also slated as director for the new Artemis Fowl movie – based on the series by Eion Colfer. If I was a betting type I would defiantely back that movie as making the Top 10 when it hits the library shelves!

Animation rules!  But wait – real people are acting in the new entry, at number 8: Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day – I think some parents might have snuck this into the pile.  A funny tale of woe, we can all relate to the calamities that befall this family.  Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell have great comic timing and Ed Oxenbould a Bondi local boy has been showing great promise as a young actor.
