It’s Conservation week – and to help us celebrate our storytime theme this month is about saving our environment and helping to protect our native plants and animals.
Come along for some fun stories and games to Johnsonville Library on Friday 6th November at 6.30pm.
Wear your pyjamas or better still dress up as your favourite animal.
This is a free event for 4 – 10 year olds.
At this month’s late night storytime we are helping to save our environment as we celebrate Conservation week.
Come along to hear some fun stories and try your hand at some interesting puzzles at Tawa Library on Thursday 5th November at 6.30pm.
Make it special by coming along dressed in your pyjamas or even better as your favourite animal.

Conservation week is coming up and this year the theme is Healthy Nature, Healthy People. Check out all the great ideas for things to do and competitions to enter on the Department of Conservation website.
Besides finding out about events you can also find heaps of other information about our native plants and animals and how to save them. There is lots of little things we can do to help protect and save our environment.
I really like the section on attracting lizards into your garden. Did you know that we have more than 99 species of lizard in New Zealand. We also have many geckos and skinks and 33 of our skinks are found no where else in the world so it is really important that we learn how to protect them.
You can check out all the things you can do to attract them into your garden from the plants they like right through to building them a lizard house.
The library has heaps of great books on conservation as well – so slip, slop, slap and get out into the great outdoors and start saving.

Motiti Blue and the oil spill.
This book tells the story of a little blue penguin named Motiti Blue, who was covered in oil as a result of the oil spill from the Rena shipwreck. Also goes into detail about his rescue, the treatment he had at the Te Maunga Oiled Wildlife Response Unit and his release back into the wild. Overall a very fantastic book jam packed with amazing photos, especially of cute little blue penguins.
Rachel Carson and her book that changed the world.
Retells the story of Rachel Carson, a pioneering environmentalist who wrote and published “Silent Spring,” the revolutionary book pointing out the dangerous effects of chemicals on the living world. A great book to read if you are interested in conservation, biology and marine life

A great book to have on hand, especially with winter around the corner.

This book features information about 25 famous New Zealand sportspeople across a wide range of different sporting disciplines. Includes a caricature, an action photograph, a profile of the person, timeline, inspirational quote, description of the sport, training regime and trophy board. One book you must read!
To help celebrate conservation week we are keeping it green at our special late night storytime at Johnsonville Library.
So come along on Friday 7th November at 6.30pm for a fun filled storytime all about furry animals, conservation and a helping hand for nature.
In celebration of Conservation Week 2013 (8-15th September) Karori Library was treated to a special visit from our friend Kereru during our Monday storytime session.
Conservation is all about protecting and celebrating our natural environment and native wildlife and Conservation Week is a great opportunity to get involved with your friends and whanau. You might also like to have a look at the Kiwi Conservation Club website, and check out some of the fantastic books about conservation at your local library.
Michael sees something strange in the water near his house one morning and goes to investigate. A whale! So far up the river?
Amazingly he can hear the whale speak to him and when he has listened to the whale’s story Michael says he will help. At school his story is read out to the whole class but no one believes him until the head teacher comes in to tell them a whale has been seen far up the river and everyone goes to see but Michael is the only one brave enough to get close and help.
