Win your height in books

Take part in a competition to celebrate NZ Bookshop day.

NZBookshopDayBookshops are really important – they give you access to a huge range of amazing reading materials that you can fill your house and bedroom with. People who write and illustrate books use bookshops to sell their books and make money, so they can then write and illustrate even more books. So the more often you use your local bookshop, the more books can be created, and that’s an awesome thing.

NZ Bookshop Day is on Saturday 31st October (yup – same day as Halloween). To celebrate and get people involved they are running a photo competition. It’s really easy – just snap a funny and entertaining picture of yourself reading anywhere and any way, and upload it here.

The best photo will win their height in books, and the 2nd best photo will win their knee-height in books. That’s a lot of books!

Get reading, get snapping, and get into your local bookshop.

(Entries close 29th October at 5pm).

Win Pixar prize packs for writing reviews

We have 5 ‘Inside Out’ prize packs to give away to this week’s Kids’ Club reviewers. Inside Out is the new Pixar movie being released this month.

Each awesome prize pack contains a tshirt, hard back journal, puzzle, and some stickers. All you have to do is write a Kids’ Club review of something you’ve read recently, and each review written his week will go in the draw to win one of these cool packs!

Looking for something to do?

How does earning prizes for writing book reviews sound? You read that correctly! All you have to do is grab a book, read it, go to our Kids’ Club webpage, write a review of the book, and click on submit.

Your review will be published online for the whole world to see. Even better – you will earn a prize after writing your first 2 reviews, and then for every 5th review from then on. Really thoughtful reviews might be picked to win extra cool prizes. We’ll send you an email when you’ve earned a prize and let you know when it’ ready to be picked up from your local library.

If you’re stuck for something cool to read, why not have a look though all the recently written reviews? These are reviews written by kids, for kids, and about kids books. So you can really find out what people your age think about them.

Give Kids’ Club a go – it’s really fun.

WIN Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller

Book cover courtesy of SyndeticsWe have THREE copies of the brand-new book Nightmares! by Jason Segel (who you might know from The Muppets movie) to give away to some lucky readers! All you have to do to enter is tell us how you would fight off this nightmare. I’ll start it, you put your imagination to the test and tell me how it’s going to end. Ready? Here we go…

You stand in front of an old, spooky, abandoned house. The door is falling off its hinges but you push it open and step forward. The door slams shut behind you and it is pitch black inside. You feel in your pocket for a flashlight, take it out and turn it on. You walk down the hallway to the door at the end and push the door open. Right in front of you is an enormous three-headed monster with giant, sharp teeth ready to pounce at you! Quick, what do you do next?

Comment on this post with your answer to be in to win! Please also include the name of your local library so that we know where to send your prize if you win!

To help get your thinking caps on, here’s a teaser of what Nightmares! is all about:

“Charlie Laird has several problems.
1. His dad married a woman he is sure moonlights as a witch.
2. He had to move into her purple mansion, which is NOT a place you want to find yourself after dark.
3. He can’t remember the last time sleeping wasn’t a nightmarish prospect. Like even a nap.
What Charlie doesn’t know is that his problems are about to get a whole lot more real. Nightmares can ruin a good night’s sleep, but when they start slipping out of your dreams and into the waking world–that’s a line that should never be crossed. And when your worst nightmares start to come true . . . well, that’s something only Charlie can face. And he’s going to need all the help he can get, or it might just be lights-out for Charlie Laird. For good.”

Thank you to Random House for supplying us with these great books!

Fine print: You must be a Wellington City Libraries member aged 5-12 years old to be eligible for a prize. Winners will be drawn at 5pm on September 19th, 2014.
