Beyond The Page! Amazing school holiday events for all!

School holidays are nearly upon us and this is a great time to get down to your local library and find out about an amazing Children and Youth Festival called Beyond The Page, which is taking place at libraries in Wellington, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt from the 8th to 23rd July. Over two weeks we have 28 events happening, in Wellington City Libraries that’s going to make these school holidays the best ever. Come along and immerse yourself in the world of story! Write your own stories and poems, make a zine (your own small magazine) we will even put it on the Library shelf for other people to read, listen to stories from the Royal New Zealand Ballet, build box forts – the list just goes on and on and on…..

Help us celebrate the opening of the festival with Poetry and Pancakes Saturday 8th July at 11am. Write a poem and yes you get a pancake for your efforts! Discover all the different sorts of poems there are – acrostic, haiku, magnetic blackout anything goes. Listen to poet Michael Howard reading some of his poetry and have a go at reading your own.

In the first week of the festival we have the wonderful Sir John Trimmer bringing us Tales from the Royal New Zealand Ballet. He will be telling stories from some of the best loved ballets using voice, music and mime. This is definitely one not to be missed!

This is just the beginning with so many more events to tell you about, so keep an eye on the Kids Blog for updates. Better still when you’re at your local library picking up some books, grab a calendar of all the events on offer. There’s also a great website www.beyondthepage.nz which has all the events plus a unique version of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy to watch.

The best bit? It’s all FREE! We have fantastic prizes to be won over the festival with our competitions, take part in our Wellington-wide scavenger hunt, doodle, write or draw in our Traveling Journals and share your thoughts and pictures with the Wellington region! Are you curious enough to go Beyond The Page…
