Guy Fawkes

November 5th is Guy Fawkes night!  Wellington’s biggest annual fireworks display, The Pelorus Trust Sky Show will be held on the Wellington Waterfront at 9pm.  This is always a fantastic showcase so make sure you and your family head down early to secure yourselves a great spot.

Do you know why we celebrate Guy Fawkes?  Over 400 years ago in 1605 a group of men plotted to blow up British Parliament to kill the King of England.  Guy Fawkes was part of this group and it was his job to guard the gunpowder and start the explosion in the cellar of Parliament House on November 5th.  However news of their secret plan was leaked and guards caught and arrested Guy Fawkes before he could light the explosives.  He was later sentenced to death.  Since then November 5th became an annual celebration with bonfires and fireworks in remembrance of the failed plot to kill the King.  Interesting stuff!!
