Catalogue search for World Languages

The easiest way to search for literature in our World Languages collection on our catalogue is to follow these steps:

  1. Enter the name of the language into the search box. For example “Hindi” https://catalogue.wcl.govt.nz/?section=search&term=hindi
  2. Then down the very bottom of the lefthand menu, click on “Language”.
  3. Then click on “Hindi”.
  4. From there you can narrow your search down further using the lefthand menu. Clicking on “Subject” will allow you to choose between Children’s and Adult literature.
  5. Once you have found a book you would like to reserve, click on the orange “Place Reserve” button and enter your account details.

World Languages arrive at Arapaki Library

After Zines and Learning English, World Languages is the third new collection to be added to our CBD branch, Arapaki Manners Library on 12 Manners Street. You can now borrow books from Arapaki for adults in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. Arapaki is our fourth branch to have an adult book collection in Chinese, but the only one to currently hold French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

You can also borrow books for adults in Chinese from our branches in Johnsonville, Karori and Newtown. Newtown Library also has books in Punjabi, Samoan, and other Pacific Island languages, such as Cook Is., Fijian, Niuean, Tokelauan, Tongan, and Tuvaluan. In addition to Chinese, Johnsonville Library also has an adult Hindi book collection. One of our other larger branches, Kilbirnie, has adult books in Arabic, Gujarati, Hindi, Sinhalese, and Tamil.

If you are after other languages in our World Languages collection, such as Catalan, Dutch, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Thai, and Vietnamese, they will be available to reserve soon from our warehouse in Johnsonville!

Finding World Languages

The Central Library was the main home of Wellington City Libraries’ adult World Languages Collection. So where can you find our collections of books in other languages for adult readers now that Central is closed? Below are a list of languages and the branches they can be found at. Enjoy!

Chinese

Lao Zhong yi / Gao, Mantang Both fiction and non-fiction is available at our Karori and Newtown branches, as well as our newly opened branch, Johnsonville Library at Waitohi.

We also have eBooks and eAudiobooks in Chinese available to borrow from anywhere through the Overdrive service. You can read them online through our website, or on your device through the Libby app. All you need to login is your library card number, and your 4 digit PIN.

Hindi

Amma. / Shinghal, RajjanBoth fiction and non-fiction is available at our Kilbirnie branch. Our newly opened branch, Johnsonville Library at Waitohi, has a collection in Hindi as well. Johnsonville also has the magazine, Grishobha, which is free to borrow for one week. Karori, Miramar, and Newtown branches also have this magazine.

Samoan
