Subject spotlight: Mental health

We live in a fast paced world that can sometimes make us feel overwhelmed and anxious. We all need a bit of a mental health tune-up in these times, but often it can be difficult to know just what might work for you. This is where the beauty of a library membership comes into its own; we buy lots of different books and you can try them out without having to spend money on something that might not work for you.

Here are some suggestions from our new book list that might be useful to you. Remember, this list is just a handful of new titles.  For more help with finding resources you can always talk to your friendly librarian!

Pencil Saturday 21 February in your calendar for a visit to our Central Library Expo on Health & Wellbeing, where local, not for profit organisations will be presenting their services and answering your questions on the valuable help & advice they provide. Young or old, suffering from mental illness or the friend, relative or colleague of a person struggling with an addiction or dealing with abuse, these organisations can offer you some support.

Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley provides community legal services for unmet legal needs. Drop-in free legal advice sessions are available for initial legal information and advice. CLW are committed to informing and educating our community about legal rights and responsibilities by producing a range of plain-English legal publications. They provide legal education on different topics and in different formats as well as restorative justice services throughout the Wellington region.

Literacy Aotearoa

Literacy Aotearoa Wellington  exists to support adult learners to improve their numeracy, literacy and computer skills, but it’s also about increasing confidence. By providing a whanau style learning environment, with a particular focus on Pasifika and Maori adults, those who may have previously struggled at school feel comfortable and safe to learn and make mistakes. We run a variety of learning programme, here are some examples of what you could learn:

  • Reading and understanding
  • Writing, spelling, grammar
  • Numbers
  • Financial literacy/budgeting
  • Communication skills
  • Vocabulary/New words
  • Speaking and listening

Youthline

Youthline Wellington provide an accessible and relevant counselling and educational service to young people and the community, with a particular emphasis on well being and stress management. Youthline aims to deliver telephone and text counselling daily and education programmes primarily to youth in the Wellington region, but also to others in need.

Wellington HELP

Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation offer services for those effected by sexual abuse, rape and all forms of sexual violence including:
24/7 crisis support service following sexual assault,
Counselling for those effected by sexual violence and those recovering from family violence,
Information and support for families, professionals and others helping those recovering from abuse,
Consultation service about preventing and responding well to child sexual abuse.

Atareira

Atareira is a Wellington based organisation providing mental health support for families and whanau of people with mental health or addiction issues:
One in five new Zealanders will experience a mental illness at some stage in their lives. People do not become unwell in isolation and this means that the people who love and care for them will also be affected.
Free services include:
Face to face and telephone support, information about mental illness, addictions and treatment options, advocacy and liaison with mental health and community services, specialist support for children and counselling.
Easy Access Housing:
Supportive landlord service that offers temporary/transitional housing for those who are experiencing housing difficulties in relation to their mental illness or addiction issues
Community Activity and Participation Service:
A range of community based activities are organised for people with mental health or addiction problems.

PGF

The Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand (PGF) is the largest single treatment provider for problem gambling in Australasia with over 60 locations throughout New Zealand.
PGF’s mission is building healthy communities together, free from gambling harm.
PGF has both a clinical component whereby qualified counsellors provide free, professional and confidential counselling for gamblers and others affected by gambling and a dedicated public health team that works in the community to raise awareness about problem gambling and minimise gambling-related harm.

Age concern

Dedicated to older New Zealanders, Age Concern promotes dignity and respect for all older people as well as providing expert information and support services in response to older people’s needs including:
Support Services, Information, Advice and Personal Advocacy: Responding in person/phone to a range of queries from older people and their carers eg. Advising where to obtain a service, what is available. Providing confidential support and empowerment to older people.
Information Resources: Providing pamphlets and other written resources.
Visiting Services: Providing visitors who make regular visits to socially isolated older people in their homes via Age Concern Accredited Visiting Service.
Education: Holding education seminars for the public and Rest Homes, e.g. Positive Ageing, Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention, Enduring Power of Attorney.
Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service: Providing confidential support, advocacy and information for people facing elder abuse and neglect.
Representation: Providing representation and advice on older peoples’ issues to local influential groups eg. City Councils.
Other services: Staying Safe Driving Courses.

Women's refuge

Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s most significant domestic violence organisation helping women who are living in fear in their relationship or family and those who know someone who is.
All women of New Zealand and their children are welcome to free advice, emergency accommodation and confidential advocacy services provided by women.
Women’s Refuge can:
Talk to you if you’re worried about your safety in your relationship and help you make a Safety Plan
Provide a safe place to go to if you need help urgently
Help you stand up for your needs whether or not you are thinking about leaving.

The range of tools offered include:
Budget planner
Debt calculators that show you how long it will take to pay off your debt.
Apps such as money personality profilers, which discover how your personality affects the way you manage your money.
Goal worksheets, to plan and track your financial goals.
Advice to plan for those life-changing moments such as going flatting for the first time, buying a home or having a baby as well as planning for retirement.
