Please note though that Wadestown and Kilbirnie libraries have upcoming closure dates due to planned maintenance — please see the library homepage for details.

What changes in Orange?

At Orange all our branches are open (find any library closures, changes of hours or services above), but with the current slightly reduced hours, reduced programmes, and some restrictions in place to keep staff and the community safe:

  • Mask – Wear a mask if you are 12 years or over – unless you hold an exemption card. You can remove masks to eat and drink in café spaces within our facilities. You can wear surgical masks, cloth face masks or heavier-grade respirators like N95 masks. Makeshift masks like scarves, bandanas and pulled up t-shirts are no longer permitted in our facilities under the Government’s guidelines.
  • Be Kind – our people will be doing their best to offer our full range of services and facilities. Customer-facing staff will be wearing masks unless they are not required to for safety reasons.
  • Please stay home if you’re unwell, or if you or someone you’ve been in close contact with has COVID-19. Please keep your library items at home as we will extend loans and/or waive late fees until you are well enough to return them. We have plenty of eResources available to use while you recover.

For help, call us on 04 801 4040 during office hours or email enquiries@wcl.govt.nz

The Ministry of Health is asking people to stay home to help stop the spread of COVID-19 if they, or someone they live with tests positive. More information is available on the Ministry’s website — what to do if you test positive (covid19.govt.nz)

  • These steps apply to all visitors, contractors and couriers visiting our spaces.
  • Use EFT-POS or other contactless payments if you can. We will accept cash but prefer not to for hygiene reasons.

Additional cleaning of our branches will continue.

Library customers can continue to access a huge range of online resources at our eLibrary. This includes eBooks, magazines, movies, and online courses.

At Orange, on-site events and programming can be run. However, because staffing shortages are still ongoing, we won’t look to restart this programming until staffing is back at a normal level. Check the Event Calendar and Libraries’ social media for any updates.

If you have any questions please contact Wellington City Libraries by calling 04 801 4040 during office hours, email enquiries@wcl.govt.nz or message us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

What are your opening hours under Orange?

You can find our current hours on our Opening Hours page:

Opening Hours

We are still experiencing staff shortages as staff become unwell with COVID or need to isolate as a household contact. While the shortages continue, we’ll stay with the shorter hours.

Do I need to show a vaccine pass, and sign or scan in when visiting?

People are no longer required to show their COVID Vaccine Passes or scan in when visiting our branches or other Council facilities.

For everyone’s comfort and safety when visiting our branches, please:

  • Mask – Wear a mask if you are 12 years and over – unless you hold an exemption card. You can remove masks to eat and drink.
  • Be kind – our people will be doing their best to offer our full range of services and facilities. Most customer facing staff will be wearing masks unless they are not required to for safety reasons, or have an exemption.
  • Use EFT-POS or online payments if you can. We will accept cash but prefer not to for hygiene reasons.

What masks are required to be worn when visiting Council sites/facilities?

Under the latest Government requirements, people can wear surgical masks, cloth face masks or heavier-grade respirators like N95 masks, unless they can show an exemption card from the Ministry of Health. Makeshift masks like scarves, bandanas and pulled up t-shirts will no longer permitted as being safe enough to stop the spread of the virus.

Are events, like storytimes, running?

At Orange, programming can be run. However, because staffing shortages are still ongoing, we won’t look to restart programming until staffing is back at a normal level.

Check the Event Calendar and Libraries’ social media for any updates.

If you’re unwell, please stay home until you’ve recovered.

Is the Hive makerspace at Waitohi open?

Yes, the Hive Makerspace at Johnsonville Library in Waitohi is now open.

Can I return my books through the after hours slots in our libraries?

Yes, you can return items if your local library has an after-hours slot. All our libraries apart from Arapaki Manners Library and He Matapihi Molesworth Library have after-hours slots — so please return them during opening hours. Te Awe Library (Panama Street) is nearby these libraries in the CBD and does have an after-hours slot, but it’s currently broken.

Am I still limited to 30 minutes when I visit the library?

Our branches do not have a time limit for visits.

What online library services can I use while isolating or recovering from COVID-19?

You can access a huge range of online resources at our eLibrary. This includes eBooks, magazines, movies, and online courses.

Library customers can also arrange for a friend or family member to borrow items; let us know in advance, and we can note this on your library card.

We also offer home delivery for items people reserve at a cost. You can find out more on our Home Delivery page, or contact the team on 04 801 4040.

We are offering a contactless reserves service at our Kilbirnie and Tawa libraries with pickups by appointment from 9am-10am weekdays. Please email us at enquiries@wcl.govt.nz if you are interested in this service.
