The popular crime writer Ruth Rendell has died aged 85. Her first novel was published in 1964, titled From Doon with Death, this was the first in the Inspector Wexford series. With multiple publications some years, her large volume of work includes 24 novels in the Inspector Wexford series, 28 standalone novels, 3 novellas and 9 collections of short stories. With her pen name Barbara Vine she published another 14 novels.
Ruth Rendell received 25 awards and honours for her mystery writing. She was appointed a CBE in 1996 and was created a life peer as Baroness Rendell of Babergh in 1997 from then sat in the House of Lords for the Labour Party. Her most recent publication in 2014 was the novel, The Girl Next Door.
As Barbara Vine, the last novel was The Child’s Child, published in 2012.
